It's a good idea if it frees up three for some better shows.

Nah it will just be another channel of reality TV.

This is exactly why I subscribed to DirecTV and Netflix and stopped watching FTA. I can't stand non-stop cooking shows and blind-dating/marriage shows. They drive me absolutely mad.

nah they are not going anywhere, the reality shows are some of the highest paying ad slots each night(and cheap to buy vs producing local content)

Who actually watches that rubbish? None of the young people I know even watch TV. They get all of their on-screen entertainment from YouTube and other on-line sources. When the current (elderly?) audience dies off, the commercial channels are going to be in big trouble.

My partner frigging loves those reality cooking shows. I've pointed out to her what a load of horse poop they are. Each to their own. At least she goes and watches it on the bedroom TV usually.

BTW, she also likes married at first sight among others. yell

LOL

I really dont get the issues with content. There is so much content around, genre galore, who cares what channel its on? I dont relate any channel or provider as good or bad, as they all show content that I love, like, hate, or are indifferent about. We arent locked into one channel or provider each evening. For dumb show on Mediaworks there is a dumb one on Netflix.

So if a channel comes out, does it really matter? Many love reality shows, many hate them, thats the same with any genre. Wife and I watch MAFS. Its a bit of a hoot. Funny, silly, but there is a parallel to the real world, by compressing a relationship into weeks. For me I quite enjoy the psychology that goes on. Escapism with a touch of human science.

You really have to wonder if Mediaworks' FTA television service is viable long term. There were rumours a while ago that they received an offer from Austar to purchase their profitable radio division but I suspect it was turned down because the television business wouldn't survive on its own, especially without the synergies of having Newshub operating across platforms.

The only thing we still watch on FTA is the news. I really wish we had better news and current events coverage. I do miss the days of Holmes, the Walrus, Campbell Live, and the like. Dumbed-down 'infotainment' is not a substitute. We really do need a public service channel in this country.

The Nation (AKA 'Newshub Nation') is pretty good if you want serious current affairs. I think it's been granted funding again for this year, and Mediaworks are unlikely to ever want to axe it because it effectively provides them with taxpayer subsidised content that they can use across the entire Newshub platform.

Yes, I do watch The Nation and Q&A, but that is all. Both are worthwhile but they don't exactly get prime time exposure.

But it's the easiest way to find out which Kartrashian has a new designer dog and which minor celebrity was seen wearing the hottest new dress.
