Can someone please assist me on this problem.

I have a Panasonic smart TV Model no. TH-50AS700Z bought from JB HiFI in Oct 2014. There is no APP on it for "TVNZ On Demand"

(1) Why is this APP not present on the TV?

(2) What do I have to do to get this APP on my TV?

Many thanks

I would ring Panasonic.

They're quite responsive.

Welcome to the World of "Smart TVs" where software support and updates are measured in months.....

Your best solution is probably going to be to get a streaming box to handle the "smart stuff"-

- AppleTV appears to well supported for the NZ apps,

Has it had the app in the past, or was it never there?

Get a HTPC or use a Laptop. Smart TVs are not really very smart and the Apps you get are only those allowed by the Manufacturer in their FW. I get the impression from recent Forums that the introduction of the new Freeview on Demand App has removed some of the older apps on some TVs?

Welcome to my world.

I have a 2013 vintage Panasonic smart TV. YouTube introduced a new API for videos and now my Panasonic TV can't view YouTube videos without crashing. Panasonic haven't rolled out an update for this model.

Question; Is there a TV manufacturer who contentiously provides updates for a reasonable time?

This really is the key question. If it never had it, it's never going to have it.

Freeview On Demand via HbbTV delivers better functionality than the TVNZ app but HbbTV looks to have only appeared on Panasonic TV's from the 2015 models.

From the press release:

The new Freeview On Demand is available now on selected Smart TVs and will roll out over the coming week to all Smart TVs released since July 2015, as well as connected set top boxes and recorders.

I should qualify this by saying I don’t believe there is a TVNZ on demand any more since the update

I have a 2017 Panasonic smart tv that dosn’t have if either. If that’s any help.

However it does have the new Freeview on demand app. Accessed by the green or red button on the remote, I forget which one.

1) the green button activates the new freeview on demand,

2) my 2015 Samsung TV  (JS8000) has a TVNZ APP on demand app and the Freeview option so the TVNZ app is available for some makes/models at least

3) Samsung impressed me by releasing a major software upgrade to my TV after 2 years which allowed youtube to start working fully again, better MKV playback and also enabled HDR on netflix. Based on that I am happy with Samsung (although expect that 2 years may well be end of life for updates - that was the last one and was a year ago)

4) You can cast the TVNZ app to via a mobile phone and a chromecast so that may well be your cheapest solution.

Seems like that TV was never advertised with that functionality to me after looking online, Smart TV's are a mixed bag of functionality..

Some are barebones like yours(netflix and lightbox apps and a webos style interface) and some are feature rich and more future proof(sony android etc imo)

Likely never there. Samsung had the 10 year contract with them. And then did a OTA removal of it once it lapsed and platform changed. About the time other providers started rolling it and it shifted from the samsung app store to android.

Since then, as said above only some of the android based units had it rolled out or had freeview stamp of approval that bundled most the ondemand abilities as far as I know.

Samsung also advertised a series of tv's that used an "evolution" kit upgradeable system. That was supposed to have a new hardware card expansion upgrade kit released every year for at least 4 years.. which had a faster processor , more memory and upgrade the o.s.

When they failed to deliver some people made successful claims against samsung and got brand new current models tv's in exchange.

I have the ES 8000 and I think youtube, skype and 3now or TVNZ on demand are long gone. Overseas models of this set have HBB. Which I think can be enabled in the service menu, but I expect it won't be compatible.

Thanks for this! I have just purchased a 2017 Panasonic TV and couldn't for the life of me work out how to access Freeview OnDemand - there's no specific help on Panasonic's or Freeview's websites. However, unsurprisingly, the answer could be found here on Geekzone.

@travelbug99 Just a thought: Recently bought an LG C8. Couldn’t find the TVNZOD app. Then later found it hiding inside the FreeView app - an app within an app - go figure. Also found the 3OD app in there. Both work fine but every time you want to use them you have to open FV first.

If your FV app is anything like the LG one, open FV. Then across the top we have TV Shows, Movies, Apps. Open Apps and we have separate apps for TVNZOD, Three OD and Māori TV OD.

Edit: Sorry just re-read your OP. Now realise that your TV is four years old. I was responding thinking it was new.
