I'm surprised these guys are still in business, especially with the rise of smart tvs now.  They've made a whole business from bringing in cheap china boxes with some local firmware adjustments marketing.  They've never had a good user interface/experience and all that we've had have failed fairly soon, though just outside of formal warranty periods.  I'm not a fan.

I'm surprised as well. They do seem to have a fairly consistent record of releasing products with half-baked and buggy firmware before they are really ready for the market, and then debugging the firmware later to try and patch problems that should have been obvious and fixed pre-release. I'm going to stick with Panasonic units. The software may be clunky and fugly as hell, but at least the units seem to work as intended.

Anyhow, I want to thank all the people who have posted detailed reviews of their experiences with this unit. I have an elderly relative who, against my gut instinct given the reviews of earlier Dish branded models, was looking to buy one of these. Having both satellite and terrestrial tuners was (bizarrely since they can't get a terrestrial signal where they live) attractive to them. This thread has validated my instinct, and given me more than enough reasons to tell them not to touch it.

I think the "not to touch it" is a bit too far. It sounds like it simply doesn't work when it does.

I'd go as far as to say that your Panasonic unit may be great now but most likely needed update over its lifetime. And it's clunky and fugly. So compare "clunky" with how this unit works (not clunky) and so on...

Ok another update from a non tech guy.

On my setup 65" LG tv will display whatever you give it but sound is through an amp. So on the A2 for the picture & sound glitching that some maybe getting, here's a good tip to try that will significantly reduce this (on my setup anyway). I say reduce cause sometimes a nano second of sound will glitch but is far in between & I've been watching a lot of car racing on tv3 at the moment with fast moving action which was a good testing ground of back & forth to display setup.

Just now I noticed a picture glitch but TV has been on a long time since. But I'll check or change my cables too I think.

Anyway go into display setting on android & whatever you are on & untick HDMI Auto Adaptation & change to 1080i 50hz. See if that works for you. I noticed a lot of glitching on the 1080P side more regardless of resolution & hz.

That's it.

I'd agree with this. Whilst there are some issues to UI and build code that I think are still to be worked out, I think the unit shows a lot of promise and I'm looking forward to using it some more over the coming months. At present we still have 7-10 days of Sky TV subscription to roll but thereafter the box will be service full time. My hope is that the Freeview app can have further tweaks to the UI in further updates. Wish list includes

1. Being able to set a jump to time code when wanting to fast forward in a recording. At present it's just 38x speed and wait until you get to 47 mins in etc. That's a pain

2. Ironing out glitches when rewinding recorded TV.. the unit seems slow to do so and at slow speeds seems to repeat content several times in 1-2 sec loops as it tries to rewind.

3. Sorting out the jittery buffering playback of on-demand content that seems to bedevil units that have some uptime on the clock. I find a restart works but it's a PITA to do this.

4. Access to more good play store apps would be nice instead of having to sideload.

5. Not sure why but I have issues trying to review/play/book at Play Movies content since creating a Google account and signing in with it on the A2. It could be n00b errors on my part with the account I created?

Do they code the firmware themselves, or do they submit change requests back to the manufactures in china.

Big difference, especially in terms of what will be fixed and when.

We are aware of an issue that some customers have experienced with playback of DRM content and are currently working on corrections for this issue.

Good to hear that the issues are now being addressed by DishTV. I'm going to live with my slow and quirky T2200 until the reports on the A2 are more favourable. e.g. the reported issues have been fixed.

Hopefully some of the requested features will also be included, like the option to choose the maximum number of recordings for a series with older episodes being automatically deleted.

Pete

It would be great if the team at Dish could post a whatsnew.txt or change log somewhere.

Thanks for the heads up :)

My bad I found it on the website - should have looked first. Apologies to Dish.
