Operating system updates will still check and happen

Freeview apk won't auto update, Because modified apk has a different signature you will need to check periodicly for official app updates, don't worry too much because I am anyway and will report when new modified apk will be available.

Cheers
Steve.

Installed MJH 1.30 patched version and it works fine.

Like others have already mentioned the app really needs to allow a click on the channel from the guide to go to it though.  Hopefully they make these small tweaks and add Freeview OnDemand soon as that would make it an awesome solution.

I'm really interested to see if what the support response is.

EPG data is Updating... has been for days...

Tried resetting and updating the SmartVU....

Bought one on special from NL and have the same EPG issue.  Without a functional EPG this is junk.

This device feels like its about 80% of the way to being a great wee product but there are a few things that really let it down.

No working EPG for almost a week isn't really acceptable for a product that people have paid good money for.

I also get occasional buffering on the mediaworks channels. Anyone else experience this?

I bought this for my daughter.  I'm not installing a hacked version of what should be working out of the box and then risking having it stop again.

The EPG is a core function, obviously, for it to be not working is amateur hour for the provider!

Fair enough. Yea I agree it's jank, I have also experienced wifi issues with it. Just randomly won't open apps even though it says it's connected, have to do a reboot for it to start working.

They said android 9 is coming for the device, hope that fixes a few little issues like this.

Android 9 is not going to make a difference if it's a cobbled together mish-mash of broken URLs.

Still haven't heard back from my support request, I'll give them a ring next. If they don't sort it out a lot of people will just get a refund.

sdavisnz: Download apk to PC or phone

Upload to Google drive (in new folder)

On android tv device, turn on unknown sources, usually in security settings.

Install es file explorer on android TV* (play store)

Navigate to cloud drive

Sign in with Google account

Find apk in folder

Download and install.

Have the MH Freeview APK installed and working... Thanks :-)

Learning how to use the SmartVU UI to find and install things was a bit of a learning experience.

Looking forward to Freeview On Demand and also some of the other Freeview channels.

sdavisnz: There is an unofficial fix for this

If you follow

https://mjh.nz/2018/12/freeview-live-tv-android-app-unlocked.html?m=1

Download modified apk,

It was modified today to pull epg data from working url.

Uninstall old Freeview app
Enable unknown sources
Install sideloaded app

Epg will start working, also bonus, it won't ask you to sign into a Freeview acc.

Thinking since last night when I found this gadget to buy it, but from comments here and this unofficial fix its clearly a gadget not ready to be sold imo...so NO SALE Here....Laurie

I can't help wondering if that's actually the point of this product. Was it intended to fail?

Will it disappear from the Freeview offering based on the 'fact' that streaming services simply aren't what people want, or will the inadequacy of the cobbled-together infrastructure be used to justify the need for a Freeview-controlled infrastructure - one which conveniently comes with DRM restrictions?

I rather think the 'fact' that people have bought the unit proves that streaming services is what many people want.

I would doubt that the provider or Freeview want it to fail either.

I would seem they need to do some fix-ups PDQ - It's not good that core parts of the functionaility are broken.

I suspect it was dipping a toe in the market to measure demand. Sounds like the demand is there, now they need to make something reliable.

@dratsab came here for a churrasco last weekend... For him, living on a dead Freeview area, this product is ideal.
