If you have problems with over heating then you should get a replacement.... Unless you are a tinkerer like me. :-)
As others have said... keeping the SmartVu X cool helps.
I added heatsinks to some of the ICs on mine.

My first ever network connection was a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.
Are there any issues with this device and surround sound?
I picked one up recently and haven't really played with it too much. Had it connected through my matrix switch and wasn't getting any surround sound on my amp (e.g. on Netflix). This isn't that unusual as I had something similar with my Panasonic PVR that I never figured out (that's another story, just plugged it direct to the amp instead).
I tried plugging it directly into the amp and rebooted etc but I'm still not getting surround sound. Is there a trick or some setting I might have missed? I tried both PCM and RAW in the Android TV surround settings (my amp doesn't do the newer HD formats) but that didn't have any affect. Netflix doesn't even show the 5.1 audio option anywhere that I can see.
Is this a Dolby Digital Plus issue? I hope not because the only reason I bought this was to watch Netflix without having to use my Playstation.

Dish TV didn't have anything to say other than "Ask Netflix", which I thought kind of missed the point.
You have your 'SmartVU' HDMI ARC selected..

You have your 'SmartVU' HDMI ARC selected..
Is this directed at me? It's plugged straight into my amp. I'm pretty sure the problem is Netflix only outputs DD+, my amp doesn't support it and SmartVU doesn't have the license to decode it. There's some hacks online for the Nvidia Shield but not sure if they will be applicable to this unit. I guess I might try looking into it if no one has any other advice?

I have my unit plugged into the TV which is connected to my Tuner/Amp by a HDMI ARC connection both ends, when I selected HDMI ARC on the SmartVU unit it gave me the ability to switch all units from it's remote, I have full surround sound, but prefer headphones.
Yet to figure out how to incorporate my Dish Sat Tuner, it is HDMI connected to the tuner but I have to switch it seperately.
Hello.
I picked up a SmartVu a few weeks ago to test the Spark Sport app.
Now that I have decided to just use the TV app, I thought I would re-purpose this a Freeview dongle for a TV in the spare bedroom where there is no cable from the aerial.
But when I select TVNZ1 or any of the other Freeview channels, the screen goes grey for a second or two then the main menu reappears, no channel will load at all. Is there something that needs to be activated for this to work?

Needs the Freeview app updated I suspect. I read elsewhere that some of the channel URLs had changed since the original release.
Could it need to be signed into a Google account to update the apps?
mattwnz:Stu1:tb9: RWC promo email just received from TVNZ in relation to their RWC coverage states:-
We won’t be streaming Rugby World Cup 2019™ on tvnz.co.nz, TVNZ OnDemand apps or through Freeview SmartVU.
Spark Sport will have all 48 matches available to stream online.
Thats gotta suck for all those people who ditched their aerials and hoped just to watch the FTA games on TVNZ without paying extra.
They have been advertising that during ondemand shows for the last 2 weeks, must be don't have the rights for online streaming. Interesting to know how streaming rights work
So does that mean that devices like the smartvu where people are using it as a UHF replacement will stop working on those channels when the games are on. That is pretty terrible, especially for those people who can't get a TV signal. My parents couldn't get a reliable uhf signal without pixilation so purchased a smartvu to get FTA tv, I hope they sort that out.
nice pix from earlier on show this device may be Hi3798MV2DMJ, aka "HiSilicon STB Push-to-Talk Development Kit for Amazon AVS", similar to Hi3798MV200 & HDR10 (https://www.sekorm.com/news/1000000001029124.html)
starts looking like some really weird discontinued chinese chipset ("Huawei Hisilicon Hi3798MV200" aka "Q30") once you start digging

I'm curious what peoples thoughts are re: the smartvu (@$99 at warehouse) vs chromecast (2018 non ultra model @$59 currently)
I'm looking for something "easy" to setup for my folks - main duties will be casting, tvnz on demand and plex.

More versatile than a Chromecast. Easier to use as well. As long as they dont lose the remote! Havent plugged my chromecast back in since I got mine..
Theh smartvu has chromecast built in, so you are paying $40 extra, and you don't need to use another device to use it for many of the features. It also has ondemand built in, so it will be better in terms of features.
