Okay, so considering leaving Sky TV for Freeview, two questions:

1. should I go for HD freeview?

2. will it be compatible with my Sony Bravia LCD TV? I know it has 1080 resolution as my XBox360 runs at that.

3. if i do go Freeview HD, should I just buy one of the boxes at Dick Smiths or off Trademe or is there a smarter and cheaper option?

1) If you live in an HD area, then yes probably.  Check coverage at http://freeviewnz.tv/index.php?section_id=16

2) Yes probably.  The set top boxes all have different types of output, so you'll get some picture on any tv really.  If it's a fairly recent Sony then you'll be able to feed the HD signal (via HDMI cable) into your TV and get HD if you go with an HD set top box.

Few basics to note though, you can't get sky channels via a freeview box and Prime is not broadcast on freeview yet.  These apply for both hd and normal (sd) boxes.  Just thought I'd mention that as you said you're currently with Sky TV.

Also, I would recommend a bricks 'n mortar shop, it don't cost much more. Pay the extra & get piece of mind regarding the purchase (warranty etc). Or if Trademe, at the very least, use their Safetrader option given the issues this site is having.
