I tried it last night and I can't say I'm too impressed.

Instead of having sound cut out on TV3s channels and not coming back until I change channel and change it back again I'm having it cut out, come back after a few seconds but often with an incredibly loud buzzing over the sound system... Until I change the channel and change it back again.

The PVR works, but the controls and implementation like you said are clunky, and I hope the USB port will be powered or this 2.5" 120GB drive I've had lying around waiting for 6 months is going to be a waste of time.

/sigh

I'll give it more of a go tonight. I'm just not sure where all the time spent writing this firmware has gone, it doesn't seem polished at all.

It would be nice if they would just concentrate on fixing the annoying bugs like the lockups and sound dropouts first before adding the PVR features.

I can't see this happeniing.  I have a feeling the design of the PCB was never intended to support the PVR functionality which has subsequently been hacked on.  Thus a powered USB port was never designed in at the beginning.
I think that it will be powered USB HDDs or  fast Flash based devices only.

You can also see this from the design of the UI.  The PVR menu has been added as an afterthough and closer integration with the rest of the menus will probably require a large re-write of code.  Something that we are unlikely to see given the level of support so far.

I can confirm that my powered 3.5in HDD works fine.

Yup. Agreed.  The information I have from Peter is that the SPDIF fix in included in this 'upgrade'.  It clearly doesnt work.

Something I have also noticed after doing a long 2 hour recording last night is that that if you are recording and watching the same channel at the same time, the Audio on the TV gradually goes out of sync over time.  The recording is OK though.

Several of my recordings on TV1 and TV3 have also recorded the top LH 2/3rd of the screen.  Cutting out large portions of the viewable area.

I think this is pretty much the end of the unit for me. I'll just keep it until I can afford to pick up something that works as advertised.

When are Sony releasing PlayTV again? ;)

I can confirm that a couple of recording tests I did to a USB flash drive did appear to work.
However, as noted above it looked like the top LH 2/3rds of the screen only was recorded. Also, a test record on tv3 seems to lack any audio, but another try worked.

There is a 'record now' function - You have to press the info button, then when thats displayed press the "Red" button. You cant move away from that mux - ie you can change channels to tv4 while recording tv3, but not to tvnz for example. To stop, press the info button and press "Blue". The "Info" screen has to be displayed to get the coloured action buttons to work.

Tried looking at the .ts files on my PC - VLC doesnt like them, neither did TSCONVERTER - Not sure what can open them.

They seem to have fixed the display under the info button - Now tells you if the signal is 720p/1080i etc - just used to say whatever the TV was set to.

Also, I note that when you first tune the box in, it displays a signal strength %age. Doesnt show it after that though.

Curious that the software is now 1.03 - wasnt the previous 1.05?

Cant comment on other audio issues (SPDIF) - I only have an HDMI connection. Did try the box connected via the RCA plugs though - Sound went 'hicky' on three at one point.

Is the box more or less stable now?

I appears more stable.  However I used to have to restart it weekly, and we are nowhere near that point yet.

HERE IS A GIANT GOTCHA GUYS

I came home tonight after putting the unit on stanby yesterday evening.  It is 21:46 now and the clock on the unit is reading 11:56.  This means that it is highly likely that timer recordings will not work if the unit is on standby and the clock wanders.

I think they have got this all wrong trying to add extra features when they still have serious stability problems like the clock, picture quality, remote disfunction and sound sync etc ...
I was hopoing the update would address some of these issues?
Why dont these people listen!!

because it is everyone here that is not listening, Peter was quite clear in saying it was a problem with your signal, the brightness of the lights in the room, the alignment of the moon or your eye colour.

These boxes are perfect, there is nothing wrong with them :D:D:D

Well just updated to the PVR software. Hmm, sound on TV3 and C4 is all weird, not dropping really but up and down and really annoying through hdmi. Haven't tried through rca, but will try that next.

Just tried to go back to the Nov firmware and it doesn't seem to work. It just cycles between boot and check after the count to 100?? Anyone else had this issue?

Can get it to use the PVR software again.

Think this has really buggered the machine, as aside from the usual clock, and occasional crashing and drop-outs on optical unit it was working ok. Now I can't watch TV3 or C4 on it.

Wish I had I given up on the PVR software.
