Some info on heat from Hitachi (MTV drive manuf):
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/technolo/drivetemp/drivetemp.htm
(also: http://www.hddtemp.com)

I'd never let my PC drive run as hot as the MTV drive was getting. It's as simple as popping in a very quiet fan. My PC drive is currently reporting 37°C (luke warm to touch) in a very warm room (26°C).

I can locate a temp probe if more detailed data is req, but the MTV is currently running cooler outside of the cabinet on a shelf. Also seems to be running cooler since I disabled "Timeshift / Pause Live TV" which actually means it was always recording while on. I don't need that feature.

Anyone else noticing how loud the fan's get on these? Sounds like mine might need to have some dust blown out ;-)

Also wouldnt mind upgrading the HDD to 1TB has 500GB just isnt enough, or the option to backup to the network would be nice :-)

The MTV 3600TD has no fan. It should be almost completely silent.
Maybe your drive's bearings are on their last legs.. :)

Agree on backup options, but think it may be a very long wait.

Strange when it's a fan noise, nothing like a HDD :) The only time you really notice is when it's a really hot night, like the last couple of days :)

That's really not a good sign at all. The only moving part is the HDD. Mine is almost completely silent. If I put my ear right up to it I can just hear the gentle whir of the HDD. How long have you had your MTV?

Thanks for the 3.11 firmware tip. I'll stick with 3.09 then. Is the old firmware still available for downgrades?

I have the following firmware versions saved on my hard drive:

mtv3600_3_07NZ
mtv3600_3_09NZ - 05 Nov 09
mtv3600_3_09NZ - 24 Nov 09
mtv3600_3_11NZ - 02 Feb 10

I can upload them if people need.

I've also had my system freeze twice. Once was on the latest firmware, ver 3.11, and happened some time yesterday (Thursday). The other time was with an earlier version of the firmware. I have not worked out what caused it to freeze.

the document published by freeview NZ ltd http://www.freeviewnz.tv/images/uploads/file/FreeView%20DTT%20Receiver%20Spec%20v1_3.pdf.
does not prohibit the transfer of recorded digital content to another storage device.
the only copy protection required is the implementation of hdcp on the hdmi output.
the inference is that data shifting is optional not prohibited

what do others think ?

The document you've provided is the STB document, not the PVR spec -

"...Integrated Digital Televisions (iDTV) [see separate specification] and
Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) are outside the scope of this document."

Does anyone else have problems skipping adverts. Fast forwarding and rewinding is really erratic. I know some features are crippled, but am not sure what part of this is purposely affected and what part is just poor implementation. I find little difference between 4x -> 32x, and the time-code update is really sluggish and intermittent.

Also, I quite often notice that at certain points in the recording, if you FF or FR over a position the playback position will jump forward or back by a massive amount then continue to cycle back to that loop again. This is without bookmarks or markers. Really annoying.

The only thing that works consistently is the skip buttons, but 10 mins is far too coarse to be really useful. It sometimes gets me over a stuck position, but anything over 2x will cause the large skip again.

I maybe wrong but I'm guessing it's just trying to do an intelligent FF/FR... it'll try to slightly rewind (or ff) the position slightly to offset human's response time...

or it maybe a bug but it seems to work quite well for me

Tried firmware 3.09 and now 3.11.
80% strength, 100% quality, looks perfect.

I'm playing back existing recordings that play fine at normal x1 speed, just the FF and FR functions are erratic, imprecise and sluggish. Trying to skip to a point in the recording is like watching molasses set. The time-code definitely can't keep up with the seek rate.

Haven't noticed the large jump (loop fault) since upgrading. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who's tried editing, removing adverts, then seeking through entire clip.

Are we going to see remote scheduling anytime soon - like Tivo has(http://www.mytivo.co.nz/whatistivo/tivois/remotescheduling/)?
