I missed something here - is the 3600 getting 3700 updates?

Yes. Those reviews show that WiFi is not something easy to deal with, especially with some routers. I saw in those reviews people saying the app is not working for Galaxy Nexus and HTC One X.

I can assure you that it works on my Galaxy Nexus, and on my coworker's HTC One X.

evanh: I'm guessing High-Def recordings get encrypted when copying to the external drive. Because they certainly aren't encrypted on the internal HDD of the 3600.
EDIT: Oh, the booking bug will be for Choice TV.

MTV3600 cannot do encryption. MTV3700 performs the encryption during recording to an internal or USB external HDD.

The booking bug fix in 5.10 beta is the same as the booking bug fix in 3.18. It's not related to Choice TV.

Hi guys, just for interest the 3700 is great (increase GPU/CPU power helps , yes you can play the SD recordings straight off the ext hdd , I also sometimes use the android app on a Motorola defy and a galaxy tab - seems to work fine - but remember - I have always believed that a good tactile type remote is better than a touch screen - but the app works fine

Other than those enhancements which are dependent on hardware video processing, CPU speed, memory, software platform and SDK, etc., yes - the 3600 5.x beta firmware includes many things from the 3700 firmware.  MHEG HD engine is not one of them because it'll be unacceptably slow and needs too much memory on the 3600.

OK thanks, BTW do we know if this is Magic TV signalling the end of updates specific for the 3600?

I cannot comment on future updates.  At least we're not facing critical performance issues like two other brands here (due to the units being too underpowered to handle increased metadata from Freeview broadcasts, requiring the unplugging of antenna just to enter the EPG).

OK, I downloaded and it won't work on my Android (Gingerbread)

It installs fine and the demo works but it cannot find the MTV on the network even though I confirmed the MTV is LAN connected and can reach internet things like weather.  They share same IP range 192.168.1.XXX.

The MTV is connected to a wired / wireless AP saying it is wired back to the Router and connected to MTV wired but wirelessly ro Phone - could that be an issue as the DHCP is on the Router

The app should work on Gingerbread for Magic TV running 5.10 (beta) firmware.

Please make sure your Android phone has WiFi turned on, connected to the same network (usually the same WiFi router) as the Magic TV, gets a 192.168.1.YYY IP address.  Also make sure your wireless settings do not "separate" a device from each other for security.  Make sure the AP/router do not filter out broadcast packets.

What is the brand and model of your router, AP, and phone?

I've been following this thread for a long time and have gathered a wealth of knowledge on the MagicTV 3600, which I own.

Over the past 2 months my unit has become more and more unreliable, locking up and missing scheduled recordings almost every day. I started rebooting it once a week which fixed the problem for a while, but lately I'm having to restart it everyday to keep it running smoothly.

I have been using firmware v3.15 with the custom FF/RWD of 1min/6sec - which we LOVE to skip the ads quickly.

After reading about some others on here that have experienced lockups I took the advice they were offered and did a "Factory Reset" after jotting down the scheduled recordings so I could add them back later. That didn't make a lot of difference so tonight I decided to upload the latest firmware, specifically - v5.10 beta for 3600, using the link posted here.

Once upgraded I also ran a "Factory Reset" and then added the scheduled recordings again. So far so good.

The thing is, now I've lost the custom FF/RWD and 10 minute skips are useless once again. Can anyone tell me if I can run the custom patch/hack on top of this v5.1 beta firmware to bring back the custom skipping?

Many thanks

No, I'm pretty certain you can't.

While the mods to the firmware were fairly straightforward I think the difficulty is the firmware has a strict regime of checksums when it is installed.
Producing and including the updated checksums in the firmware was the trickiest part of getting the software patches to load.

Please let us know how your experience with the upgrade goes. I too have similar sounding lockups and self reboots, after a long time with absolutely no issues. I was starting to suspect the original HDD but not so sure and like the modded ffwd frwd too much to change the o/s at this time.
Took the remote apart on the weekend, a clean with some meths and a cotton bud worked a treat on some stubborn buttons

Time to replace the HDD.  I personally prefer 3.5" Hitachi (now acquired by Toshiba).
