I purchased mine a few hours ago from Ebay, $145 NZ all up, but I'm sure you can get it cheaper. I just saw the first competitively priced Power Seller and went for it...

It just occurred to me. I have a US PS3 that won't play PAL DVD's no matter what region (though it will play PAL video in other formats). I wonder if the PlayTV will work with it - I suspect now.

Hi again, just thought I'd point out that the recent software update has the description that it's for Australia, no mention of NZ specifically so I don't think it's coming out here any time soon with this update. It's mainly for Aus but also fixes the problems France was having, which is lucky for us as France has adopted essentially our standards. Therefore PlayTV works here, but it's not for here at this stage sort of thing, so it pays to know the limitations. It's excellent for what I wanted though, replaces my old HDD recorder and is an excellent set top box and now with working record etc. Cool.

YAY - finally (hopefully) I can use my PS3 to play *all* the Freview HD content I record on my MythTV backend, not just TV3. I won't even bother with buying a PlayTV device, not when a dual DVB-T tuner for my PC is around half the price.

How does this help you?  The update is only for PlayTV, isn't it?

Yeah, nothing to do with what you're referring to sorry.  Update is for the software that ships with PlayTV only.

ONe thing I don't understand, is why freeview HD EPG is so bad?

It just does not work.  For example, windows media center the epg does not work either.

And, the other thing, audio.   It seems there is very limited support for the audio format the wiseheads chose for freeview.

NZ is too small to be setting the standards.   I wonder if this was some way to gain exclusive market control for a few players?

Yep you are both dead right. Which is why I qualified my comment with a "(hopefully)". I just don't get why Sony have their implementation of LATM support all ready to go yet won't drop it into the main firmware. LATM isn't that rare these days.

Not as rare as it used to be, but you could probably name more famous Belgians than countries that have adopted HE-AAC audio!

There are several large discussions here on just this topic.

Essentially freeview NZ want to control the content and look/experience of the terrestrial EPG.  The data for the EPG can be transmitted in two formats, one is the raw data as EIT and the other is the pretty looking official MHEG5 version.  The PlayTV software and Windows Media Centre etc etc etc all work on the basic EIT standard, where they can take the raw data and display it however they want to.

EIT is broadcast in full on the Sat freeview service, and the system is in place on the terrestrial format as well.  However the data is limited to just a few entries used for now and next data only on the terrestrial service.

If freeview chose, they could make this work.  They haven't and we're all stuck with great software/hardware with no info to put into the EPG's as a result.

While I'm on it, the other 'benefits' of freeview approval are no HD out via component, can't transfer a recorded show to anywhere else, limited connectivity via ethernet/usb connections even if the hardward is on the unit, limited forward skip function (usually fixed at like 10min jumps forward) and capped fast forward speeds whilst whatching recorded shows in addition to the no EIT data for use on your EPG.

You can get PlayTV to do those things though, apparently by setting region to "other", its only if you select Australia that you get those "freeview approval" restrictions put into place.

I should have mine next week all going well, postal workers strike in the UK put back delivery a little for me - that said don't know if I'd be keen to lend it out!

FreeviewHD audio is an issue. I have heard that the reason we have AAC-HE LATM audio is that the broadcast engineers at Kordia went for the latest and greatest format. Of course we have DD as the multichannel format but the problem is only TV3 broadcasts in DD (stereo or 5.1) and TVNZ won't be doing so until they update their entire production workflow to move from tape to disk.  That might not happen for a while given the cost pressures they are under.

If they had chosen HE-AAC but not used the LATM multiplexing format, we might have had a chance or even better LE-AAC!
