Ok, check if the splitter is one or all port power pass, if its all, you are fine, if one, then it means you need to put the sky decoder on the powered port as they stay on all the time. It will reset occasionally which will disrupt reception but live with it or replace the splitter.

To get UHF thru to the tvs as well you need a satellite/rf diplexer before the splitter. Dish in the sat side, UHF from the sky box in the other side.

In each room you can either put another diplexer to separate them, or if the boxes you get have a LNB loop thru that will normally pass the UHF as well so can try cabling that to the antenna of the tv before investing in more diplexers.

All that stuff needs short cables with F plugs on them. lots of places will make them if you order them, dont use anything less than RG6 - there are plenty of crap cables on trademe that are just RG59 or worse. They will stuff things up.

allstarnz: All you need is a splitter like this (or similar 3 or 4 way splitter, just search splitter on DSE).  Make sure one box is plugged into the power pass port, and away you go.  Make sure all set top boxes are powered off at the all before plugging in all the boxes, as there is a chance you'll zap your box if you don't. 

I was under the impression that this would not happen.  If all ports are power pass and it's a good splitter, the internal diode steering ensures only the highest voltage input gets passed to the lnb.  So all STB's are set to lnb power ON and the splitter only ever allows one of them to pass power to the lnb at any one time.

Re freeview reception in Whanganui....

Obviously if your house can see the appropriate area of sky above, then you can receive freeview via sat. This is SD and stereo sound only.

Whanganui has high areas surrounding the low areas down where the river is. If you live in the crack of Whanganui, then you're very unlikely to receive the HD UHF signal. If you live up on the hills either side then you may receive the HD UHF signal, however to be reliable you'll need: a very high gain UHF aerial, an amplifier and probably to mount it high up a pole. Either way remember that the signal is coming from Wharite, which is on the mountain by the Manawatu Gorge/Palmerston North. It can be done, but you may have to live with a certain level of reliability given you can't get away from the physical distance you're talking about.

The freeview HD service gives you HD or upscaled pictures on TV1,2 and 3 and also dolby surround sound on some TV3 programs. Over to you if you think this warrants the costs.

Re sending SKY RF down the coax as well as Sat signals to decoders:
- Do you want a freeview decoder at each TV? (don't think you've said?)
- What type of house to you have. Might be easier/more reliable/better end quality to run separate cables, one for sat signal, one for SKY RF signal. Is this approach viable in your house?
