xarqi: I haven't seen a definitive answer.  Grant K explored a bit above and concluded that there was no HD said to be available on the $19 plan (nor TVNZ6/7).

I explored further (as per my later post) and found that the $19 plan does include TVNZ6/7, but apparently not TV1/2/3 HD.

Notice that I say apparently.  It would be good to know for sure, as you say.

as i said in an earlier post the card supplied with the basic package will allow hd to be viewed

what we don't know is whether the free view  ($19/mnth )card will do the same .

Can I just receive the Free to Air channels with my decoder?

Can I just receive the Free to Air channels with my decoder?

Yes you can, this is known as the Decoder Rental or Downgrade option which is a monthly subscription cost of $18.29 per decoder, and this will give you the following channels:

TV1, TV2, TV3, TVNZ 6 & 7,C4, Prime, Trackside & Maori TV.  You must remain on the decoder rental option for a minimum period of one month, but there is no maximum period.  (If you are a Telecom customer on the TVLINE deal this option is not available).

Please note of you are a My Sky/My Sky HDi subscriber paying a monthly rental fee $15.00 this will still apply should you downgrade to decoder rental( ie $18.29 + $15.00).

sky have said elsewhere that the my sky hdi box only shows the hd prog of 1,2 &3 the sd feeds are not available on the my sky hdi box

Please for give me if this question has already been answered.

I have had a Tivo for the past 5 years or so.  Obviously this isn't the TVNZ/TNZ official TIVO, but a hacked box that I bought out of the states and I love it.

I like the idea of MySky HDi as it would give me the multiple tuners and HD that I currently don't have, but have resisted the move as I can't archive content as I can on TIVO plus the storage space is too restricted.  ( I have programmes that are over 2 years old that are replayed many times for the kids)

So, it looks like the VU+ Duo is exactly what I am looking for in terms of functionality but how do I get the right Sky card with the HD ticket without getting MySky HDi ?

I currently subscribe to all the sports and movie channels.

any ideas?

thx

DB

I figure there is still an undefined area here. Sky are offering decoder rental with a minimum term of a month. Great. After that, send the decoder back, stop the payments, and put the card in the Duo. Somehow I don't see that working.

Sky need a specific product - "Freeview/HD access card for FTA STBs" - $5/month.

P.S.
Hmmm.
On further reflection, maybe FreeviewNZ needs to come to the party since they can't offer HD via satellite themselves.  They do a deal with Sky and sell off cards to end-users for a one-off cost - say $50.

I have read all of the previous posts, a number of times.

I understand that I can go for the decoder only/downgrade option to obtain the correct card and all tha FTA channels.  But how would I get the correct card with all the same channels that I currently recieve such as sport and movies.

cheers

DB

As I understand it, happy to be corrected please...

1) If you want a sat based HD feed of FTA channels 1,2 & 3 you need a mysky hdi box with the additional rip off $10 HD ticket.

2) I believe the my sky hdi cards will not work in these boxes too. It has to be a card from the normal basic sky digital box, and even then only some of these cards work.

3) If your current legit sky card doesn't work you need to get one of the other card types that do work from sky. You can't really call and say you want another one becuase it doesn't work in some other device, so you'll have to get creative.

4) As mentioned above, you are correct, subscribing to sky and then cancelling but keeping the card will not work, neither will loosing and replacing the card. It's against forum rules to discuss pirating sky but that's fine cos basically you cant anyway!

Nice clarification, thanks.
All of the infrastructure is there, we just need someone to join the dots between Sky and FreeviewNZ. They reached a deal over Prime on Freeview - maybe they can reach a deal on TVNZ HD via Sky's transponder.

Maybe in a year I'll be able to head down to Dick Smiths and buy a Freeview Satellite HD card for $50. The signal is already being broadcast, so it will cost Sky nothing, yet they will generate some income.

Seems like a plan, doesn't it?

I don't think you need the HD ticket to get 1,2,3 in HD, though you do need the mySkyHDi box. The HD ticket is for Sky material.

answers

  1. no you dont a std subscription will do . tv one. two & tv3 are only broadcast in hd for the my sky . i have a std subscription card and it works on the duo.

  2. not true as we said before  ablue card with 0000 in front of the card #

  3. if you have a blue card and it came with a pace decoder then it will work in the duo

  4. the cheapest way to get free view hd is to down grade from a my sky to free view only . $18.29/month if you want movies and sport then you will need a std sky package and the movies and sport extras

what we dont know yet is whether a std subscription with a 0000 blue card will let you view hd movies on the duo . it will certainly let you watch free view in hd .

OK - I called Sky.
To get Freeview HD content off their satellite service you need "MySky HDi" and to spend:
$99 up front for a fictitious installation
$15/month for HD access
$51.54/mo for a basic channel package.

The "downgrade" option at ~$20/mo does not provide HD.

Now, somebody else calling Sky may get a different answer, but that's what I was told.  Mind you, I was laughing so hard I may have misheard.

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me.

Are there different models of the Vu+ Duo?
I have been trying to find a definitive answer but cannot and I keep finding conflicting information. If it is true about only 1 impoter does that mean they are all the same units? I have been looking at the ones branded with SatLink. The image on FreeviewNZ says 8 day epg, timeshift, Prog booking & series booking (to the right of the image), and has a few extra icons around the image. http://www.freeviewnz.com/vu__duo.html I know this may seem a petty question but I like the sound of the Vu+ Duo and it seems to do everything I want (except I can’t seem to pin down the series booking) and I don’t want to have to mess about with plugins as I am a novice and would prefer to have it all working before I get it.

Thanks

I'm STILL waiting for mine, but I'm fairly well versed on what's what.

The Vu+ machines are made by a Korean company named Marusys, but sold under different brands.
To my knowledge, there is a single NZ importer/distributor (under the "Satlink" brand), but a small number of resellers.

There is one basic model of Duo, although there are small refinements of the hardware from time to time.
There is also a new, lesser product line called the Solo, with a single tuner, among other things.

There are variations in the Duo though, for example, the presence and size of any internal hard drive.

The Duo will work "out of the box" in NZ as far as I'm aware and offer a full EPG.

However, one of the great attractions of the Duo is that there are several groups around the world in addition to the manufacturer who produce variations on the software, called "images", that may offer additional facilities.  This is a great attraction for me as my first experience with a PVR proved it to be a bug-ridden nightmare unfit for release to the market, and little more than a late stage prototype.  Criticism of the unit led to abuse, not support.

I had thought I was buying a consumer unit that would work sensibly and as described, and be fixed if it didn't.  More fool I.  Now, with the Duo, at least I'm buying in to something that has many reports of successful use, and while it may have some foibles, is actively supported by multiple groups.
