hdinsider:
k1wi: Just a quick heads up for anyone interested in this area.

I'm told TV ONE will be switching to 1080 as well, I understand it will be tomorrow.

I wonder what brought on the change? Pressure from top management to go to "Full-HD" no doubt caused by TV sales hype...

When will they change the Sky platform TV1 and 2 to 1080i and how far away is Dolby?

It also means recordings take up more space, even if it's an SD show. I would prefer they streamed the content in it's native resolution. Would save on allot of recoding space.

Also thanks for the heads up about TV1.
I must say I think im licking 720p better then 1080i so far.

My Hyundai AH-3110 shows TV1, TV2 and TV3 to all be 1920x1088. Not sure why it's 1088 instead of 1080. Much improved picture on TV1 from today.

I can confirm 1080i on TV One and 2 in the Manawatu.

@geek4me
It is meant to be 1088 - all standard resolutions (such as 720x576, 1024x768 etc.) are divisible by 16. 1080 is simply an "abbreviation" or "simplification"...

I think this is great, I much prefer the enhanced resolution to the progressive scan, plus it is consistent with TV3.  When will they make the change on SKY?

I wouldn't be surprised if sky is also covering TV1 and 2 in 1080i for a couple of reasons:

1. It would match the output resolution of the MySky.

2. Has anyone else noticed that the fast-forward speeds magically doubled in speed around the time that TVNZ switched over? My suspicion is that the FF speed works by grabbing x # of frames & now x number of frames equals twice the length of time... Well that's my suspicion anyway.

Banana?

How do you tell from the MySky what resolution TV1 and 2 are in? I'm sure the picture on 1 and 2 through MySky have imroved over the last couple of weeks? Just seems crisper.

If anything, the adding of 5 sports channels would make other stuff worse, not better, but my understanding was some of the seldom used PPV channels were making way for the CG channels, not anything related to the TVNZ channels.

Actually it was the fact that TVNZ finally completed their huge upgrade of their broadcast system and so they are now better able to broadcast in HD. We should now see more actual HD content broadcast. The old system made it hard to broadcast HD programs.

Their HD MPEG 4 encoders have always been capable of producing 1080i and regardless of source material and processing, cross conversion to 1080i was always possible from day 1. It was a well considered decision to go 720p at the time, and since then a lot of marketing has described 1080i as "full HD". In reality the difference isn't that much. HD looks good either way!

Looking forward to 5.1. Bring it on!!!

don't mess with me.... i'm the hd insider....
