We have a telstra decoder with no extras. We can only 'just get channels 1,2 and 3 without a decoder. I am going to get the service cut off to save $45 off our monthly bill and have been looking on trademe for a cheap freeview. I'm going over to Twitter to retweet (-:

Wow, television as I know it will be turned off in Auckland by November 2013 ,and there will be digital TV only.

How will that affect me?

Let's see - in the kitchen I have a 14" Sony  CRT TV (inherited), in the bedroom a 20" Sony CRT TV ( again inherited) and in the lounge a 25" Sony CRT TV, along with a Sony DVD HD Recorder and a Sony DVD player.

Now by my reckoning, only the DVD player will be of any use after the change to digital broadcasts.
And as the products are all Sony, in my experience most will still be working fine by 2013.

So how will I get Digital Television?

I know, I need a HD Homecast HT9200DTR .......now where do I get that from?

Hey hey,I refuse to pay for subscription TV when most of it is not what I want to watch!
So with 3 Sat dishes I can grab a lot for free + Freeview HD (receiver is sat and terrestrial).
Wireless media player plays media from the PC, modded PS2 for fun and Sony DVD player up top, sub is to the left.  All housed in my custom cabinet where the open fire used to be!  I think it is cool anyway :)

I have a good ole Samsung 19" TV in my room, it does the job with me. The only thing that really drives me potty is that TV1 & Prime is a bit fuzzy.

Going from MySky|HD to just Analogue is like going from high quality MKV's to low quality MPG's

This device looks awesome, I really wouldn't mind having something like this, plus I know for a fact we can actually get Freeview|HD here too!

Not that I really need another Freeview recorder with the following, but hey, possibility of free stuff (which would certainly solve one family member's Christmas present...).

QNAP TS-809Pro NAS.
8x Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB (ST32000542AS), RAID-6 (10993GB usable).
SiliconDust HDHomeRun dual DVB-T tuner.
Netgear WNDR3700 dual-band wireless router.
MythTV 0.23.1-fixes SVN (backend/scheduler running on the NAS, frontend running on my laptop)

Plus of course the usual mile of cabling to fit it all together, a TV aerial amplifier, UPS and my cable modem.

Not the greatest photo in the world, but my SLR is at work right now.  Also this is all still messy from when I had to extract the tuner to take to work for the Melbourne cup last week :)

Left to right, NAS (floor), UPS (floor), cable modem, router (bottom), hdhomerun (top), wireless ap.  Not pictured: TV amp.
Hides nicely in the corner of the lounge behind a large leafy plant (convenience mostly, as this is where the cable and aerial connections terminate.  The NAS is quiet enough that it doesn't cause a problem.
No actual TV died in the making, frankly I've never really felt a compelling need to own one.

EDIT: oops, browser plugin was hiding duplicate images

Hi Mauricio,

having messed around with early media centre devices, I'm over the messing about, and ready for the sort of plug and play appliance that this box looks like.

Here's my dilemma though,  I have a trusty old Philips 32" match-line CRT in the lounge that is capable of 1080i over component but has no HDMI.  By being a Freeview approved device I won't be able to appreciate the HD output of the HT9200 as it is only available through HDMI.

Can anyone recommend a device with the same functionality as this box but that supports 1080i through component?  I have no interest in copying content off freeview, just keen to get some more life out of a perfectly good if older TV... or perhaps it is time to toss it !

Cheers
S.

After the birth of a little boy, we're still in the CRT era with a Sony 32" Trinitron that continues to do good service. I have a SFF PC under the TV for a media centre and an early DVR. One day a nice HD LCD will be on the shopping list but only if I'm lucky enough to win this (to give us an HD source) and the young fella slows down his eating.

Cheers
Mike

Hey there.

Have had a phillips 42" LCD tv for a few years now (only 720i)  and the difference with HD broadcasts and blu-ray has been phenomenal. Standard stuff just doesn't cut it any more. HD homecast would be awesome addition as we could then stop being stuffed around by Sky.

We bought a freeview reciever from Dick Smith a while ago to get TVNZ 6 for the kids and a decent C4 and Prime recpeption for us. Had a Philips 29" CRT at the time but that packed up shortly after - Suspect it died of shock or out of protest from having to deal with a crystal clear image! LOL
So now we have:
Sony Bravia 32"
DSE 7500 Freeview reciever
Sony DVD/HDD recorder
Sony VHS Video recorder (kept this when we upgraded with the HDD just to play some of the kids films still on vid). This whole set up works quite well and I can even record the Freeview signal through the DVD Hard drive Line1 input. I just have to remember to put the Freeview box on the correct channel beforehand.
Latest purchase was the Wii that we got the kids as a joint present, but I think us parents have used it more. And no matter what Sue Bradford says, there's nothing like beating your child to a pulp in the ring before sending theem to bed!

Also if I may ask a Freeview question at this time?
Why is it that on the Freeview satelite reciever there are more channels than with the freeview through the UHF TV (such as Stratos and Cue)? Quite frankly you could easily substitute Parliament TV (Yawn!) or HD Demo with either of those.

Thanks

37" Panasonic LCD, pre-Freeview vintage (by a month or two).

Use my work laptop with a USB TV tuner to get Freeview at the moment, which is fine... until I can't put off working any longer!
