I'm in a part of ChCh that doesn't get Freeview terrestrial service. I recently was given a Magic TV Freeview box (terrestrial decoder and PVR). Can I string these together so my old satellite box decodes the signal and the PVR side of the Magic records, pauses and all that? All assistance appreciated.

No. A terrestrial box is incapable of working with a satellite dish.

... and the only input that a terrestrial PVR will accept is a UHF signal, as from an aerial, and that is not something that a satellite box produces, so you can't daisy-chain them.

Sorry, the Magic tv box doesn't have AV inputs, so you can't use it to record from any external devices - just records from the inbuilt Freeview HD (terrestrial) tuner

Only good news here is that the Magic TV box is really popular and so reselling it should be no problem. The money you get could go towards a decent satellite PVR. If you pick the right one you can also then get a few Aussie channels too.

don't mess with me.... i'm the hd insider....

If you have a VCR, you could use that to record from the satellite receiver, by connecting the AV-out to the AV-in of the VCR. Obviously, would have to have the satellite receiver on and tuned to the right channel and program the VCR to record from the AV-in signal.

Some satellite receivers to allow recording to a USB drive, so check that out.

I've found the Magic tv box to be a great unit, so if it's likely you will be in a Freeview HD coverage area, I'd keep it. Nice gift!

Thanks all. This is what I suspected. I love the Magic box; too bad its useless at my place.
