Deev8:
hdinsider: According to [screenscribe.tv] TVNZ haven't done any 5.1 on shows/movies yet due to "technical difficulties". Only the rugby has been 5.1 and only on live games. Is anyone sure that there have been true 5.1 shows?

I'm absolutely certain that some broadcasts from TVNZ other than rugby have had 5.1 sound - on the basis of hearing good surround effects from my rear speakers. I've certainly heard 5.1 sound on "Body of Proof" and "The Mentalist" both broadcast last Monday, 12th September.

Me too and on a recording.

You can usually tell in a rugby broadcast if it's DD since the commentary will come from the centre speaker. If they are broadcasting DD 2.0 or AAC then the commentary will be a phantom centre speaker sound image.

Sometime I have to switch my front speakers off to check if the audio is actually 5.1 or not. Usually (actually, always) it's not (i.e. the sound goes quiet!). I swear it sounds like the dialogue is coming from my centre speaker but I guess it's just decent imaging.

Deev8: The first non-rugby broadcast with 5.1 sound from TVNZ that I've noticed was Body of Proof last night. However it seems that was the last in the current series!

The Mentalist is also being broadcast with 5.1 sound, at least it was last Monday.

That's annoying - after a couple of episodes of The Mentalist being broadcast with 5.1 sound, this week's broadcast only had stereo sound.

Come on TVNZ, get it sorted out!

I sent a message to TVNZ through their official website form, and on their facebook page about exactly this issue (bad TV2 sound quality using DD5.1/AC3).
They said they would pass the message on to the technical department.

I sent this a good couple of weeks ago, but obviously they don't care, because nothing has happened about the quality.
It still sounds horrible.

On Friday night I noticed Harry Potter was on TV2 in HD and DD5.1. it did not sound too bad and would be the first movie I have seen on TVNZ in HD and 5.1.....I still don't think the picture quality and sound is as good as TV3's. On the side I am very surprised FOUR is not in HD and 5.1 wonder if MediaWorks are considering that?

While not 5.1, that second AAC stream is hilariously funny with the narration, Was watching james bond last night and the guy telling you what was happening was just bizarre, like a hybrid audiobook and movie.

+1

Hopefully if enough people complain about the bad audio quality, something will be done.

I didn't watch it so I can't comment on the quality of the second channel but perhaps blind people might might have found it useful.

While TVNZ seem to have some teething troubles with 5.1 sound broadcasts, I thought that it might be useful to continue documenting which TVNZ broadcasts I have noticed 5.1  audio on.

'The Young Victoria', Sunday Theatre on Sunday 2nd October had good 5.1 sound.

Why is it that TV2 sounds so bad from Sugarloaf? TV1 is alot better quality. Is TV2's bitrate much lower or something?

My $0.02....

Rugby coverage, France England match:

TV1 Great Picture, easily the best; Audio, quiet dolby 5.1 mix, commentary very quiet from centre.

Edit, TV1 commentary level came right midway in the second half, so this got a lot better.
All around a great performance by TV1.

TV3 Blurry Picture compared to TV1; Audio, dolby 5.1 as well, very clear and loud commentary from centre.
