hdinsider: C'mon, it's been forever.

Watched the movie "Cars" on TV2 last night and really wanted 5.1 to go with the HD.

Does anyone know how far they are from flicking the switch and giving us all DD5.1 on DTT? Is there a TVNZ spy in the forums who can give us a heads-up?

Was about to start the same thread.....

When is TVNZ going to step-up??

Even though TVNZ HD content has slightly improved when are they going to step-up with the sound?? TV3 have been running DD5.1 since day one but TVNZ have failed miserably on this account....why have they not gone 5.1?? MediaWorks certainly have the leading edge at the moment technology wise and have always done so.....
- the first to go Nicam Stereo
- the first to go widescreen
- the first to go HD
- the first to go 5.1

I have also heard through the grapevine 3News will be going HD soon which will give that leading edge over One News!!!

It is amusing though how many people just don't care about sound or even HD.
They just turn on the TV and watch, regardless of even aspect ratio's being set right etc.
Not many people have their TV's run via optical/dig coax to a receiver capable of decoding 5.1 audio.

Im guessing that that charter BS distracted TVNZ from getting things achieved. Would be nice to see them jump past mediaworks for being ahead of the game, but they cant even sort out proper regionalization for their sat service, so really what hope is there?

Not sure about "amusing" - aspect ratio drives me NUTS when staying in a hotel/motel or at the pub and the TV is on the wrong ratio, and nobody else seems to even notice.  GRRRRR!

+2 - particually when the sky is on center cut and the tv is on zoom and its one of those crap LCDs with overscan problems. Must be half the image missing, or more.

Actually although SKy is the host broadcaster and is providing the video feed, each broadcaster has its own team and IIRC TVNZ is using Keith Quinn? That means they will need mixing booths and production facilities in NZ that do 5.1 (unlike Beijing where they were just using the host broadcaster facilities) so it might well be, that their whole workflow will be 5.1 by the time of the RWC.

Well we can hope anyway.

+ 10000000

How come hotels/motels (which always have sky) seem to end up with the picture looking washed out and fuzzy like its analogue on a crap aerial? Whats that about?

Typically its distributed via RF so they take that digital goodness and send you washed out crap that has been stretched and chopped to buggedy.

I hope they upgrade the camera used for the ASB live cross - a 4:3 camera that's plugged in using a composite connection and full of dot crawl is a joke these days!

Snow covered because the levels were low, box set on letterbox or centercut since some of the rooms still have a half broken 4:3 CRT, TV set with brightness so high you could read by a black screen etc would sum um most of the motels I have stayed in. Long way from ever seeing anything that would benifit from 5.1 when TVNZ finally pull finger...

You know TVNZ could take the opportunity to step up and be the first to offer 5.1 via satellite.....
