nope, it cannot be started at all. its failing sooo bad. it sounds like the old Playstation 1s when they couldn't read a game. just keeps a strange ticking noise

oh yeah got a email back from ultraplus. I TOLD U GUYS THEY WONT BE ANY HELP LOL ;

Hi,

First we dont recommend Virbatim HDD at all
second when you format the HDD you need to make sure that it is FAT32 so any PC could see that

in case you have formatted the HDD to Linux you need to load the file in our web-site which allowing you to see the contains of the HDD in windows as well

here is the link http://www.ultrapower.co.nz/download_ultraplus.html

Tools

  • playback directly to PC
  • We will not be able to reply to any other e-mail from you as we have not sold you this product , please contact the company who sold you the product in the future
  •
  • rgds

Did you try the suggested downloadable utility?

Ultraplus are blowing a bit hot and cold here, and can't have it both ways. When I raised the concerns I had with the 980HD in this forum, including the enormous efforts I put into getting support from the retailer, one of the first things Ultrapower responded with was "Why didn't you contact us directly?".

It's true that the retailer is your first point of contact for service, but where that fails, each supplier up the chain carries some responsibility. Since every Ultraplus unit in the world went through Ultrapower's hands at some point, they need to step up to their responsibilities.

Tried it and all it is a stupid codec to play recorded files on my computer. no help at all. and since my device cannot start up there was no use whatsoever for it.

Yes they seem to be lazy in the way that they really could not be bothered with their customers. I'm pretty sure a tv guy has no idea what he's doing with OS and so on. so why should i contact a 60 year old?

This makes me question the knowledge of their admin staff. Are they being lazy or the lack of documentation of their product has also left their employees in the dark.
i could be wrong. but either way ultrapower are a no go.

They are now on the naughty list. Expect us.

Age is no more an impediment to competence than youth.  There is one important reason for contacting the immediate supplier: the Consumer Guarantees Act requires it.  One of two things would happen as a result: either that supplier fixes the issue, or you then have grounds to approach Ultraplus again citing the CGA.

Your big hurdle really is being able to prove that you didn't screw up and the flaw lies with the product.  If you still have it, maybe you could try with another FAT32 formatted drive, although independent confirmation would be better.  Even if it is shown to be a problem with the 900HD, your recourse is likely going to be going ahead and getting professional data recovery done and then taking Ultraplus to the Disputes Tribunal to recover the costs.

I still recommend that you do nothing more with the drive until you can find a person with a Linux system and knowledge to help you out.

Well, with 2 directors and a total of 200 shares, and a head office in Flat Bush you aren't exactly dealing with Apple here.

I don't recall if you've said if the files on the suspect drive can still be accessed by the 900HD, but if they can, and it is networked, could you just put the drive back on the 900HD and copy your files off across your LAN?

nope they can no longer be accessed on the 900HD. this raises suspicions for me that it wont work in a linux either.

Looks like your left with splitting the hard drive case open removing the 2.5" drive hopping down to dse get a adaptor an go from there, not safely removing the hard drive from your ultraplus may have upset the controller chip not the drive it's self
