Hi there,

I'm trying to get my Blu-ray copy of Life (The BBC nature documentary) ripped and converted down to 720p for easy access via my XBMC setup (rather than wait ages for the Blu-ray player to load it in I want point n click access), but the source is VC-1 1920x1080 interlaced and I'm having trouble converting that format.

If I try to play the ripped MKV containing the unconverted video and audio streams even VLC is choking up (stuttery video), and Handbrake makes a real hash of converting it (unwatchable results).

So anyone know an OSX app that will take the interlaced VC-1 and convert it to a something more manageable ?  IF it could de-interlace, rescale to 720p that would be nice too.

Thanks!

Nope .. as I said Handbrake makes a real hash of it, annoying as it;s my favourite video conversion tool :-(

I have since found "ripbotx264" and I'm using a Windows VM to do the work, making a much better job of it for this format.  Maybe Handbrake, and whatever it uses behind the scenes, will get it sorted one day, but I daren't ask in the Handbrake forums! :-)

You have handbrake set to deinterlace?

Maybe set a qf of 18 or so, and see what happens.

Looking in the handbrake logs is a line that says VC-1 interlaced frames/fields support is not implemented.... Would explain the dreadful job it makes of it :-)
I'm running the latest nightly build so will have to wait for support of it later, not holding out much hope as it seems to be a wierd format and the BBC are about the only people to use it.
Ripbot264 done a good conversion though, just not as fast as Handbrake native on osx.

If you're already going to infringe copyright and format shift the Blu-ray then you might as well save the time and download a copy from the internet encoded by someone who knows what they are doing.

Oh I know what I'm doing, just hit some problems with the tools is all, was hopeful someone here would know of a solution.
Downloading is naughty ... And besides Life is too big :-)

Apparently Handbrake doesn't support interlaced vc1 video. I have successfully used MeGUI to encode it to h264. It works pretty well but is a bit more involved than handbrake.

If you know what you're doing then you would not be using Handbrake. :)

A good quality 720p encode of Life is ~30GB. Not too bad, really.
