Bought my first 2 bay Synology NAS and basically followed the recommendations.

 

But how do I know that the second disk is actually being written to?

 

I cannot see any Control Panel option and the only Synology article I came across was to recover a disk by taking it out of the NAS and attaching it to a PC.

Mobile: Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Huawei P10 Lite
Wearable: Gear S3 Frontier

I've run a mirrored 2 bay Synology for about 3 or 4 years. I've had a disk fail once. I replaced it and it rebuilt automatically.

 

In DSM you can see the disks, not from Control Panel, but from the Storage Manager which is off that 4 square icon up the top.
The Volume tab will list your disks, and it will tell you what Type of RAID you've got. Mine for instance is Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR) which is pretty much RAID 1.

There is also the HDD Management tab, where you can look at drive health.

As for it being written to, power it down, whip it out, attach to a PC, and see what's on it.

You could take a backup of your NAS (You DO have one of those right?) and then pull out a drive and pray?

I have putty installed (for work purposes).

 

However, it has been set up for me.

 

If the IP address is 192.168.1.11, what would be the Port No.

I've got 412+ with two 3tb drives in hybrid array. One drive started throwing up errors which the unit was very good at warning me about. Before it failed I pulled it out inserted new 3tb drive at it copied all data to second drive and notified me once done. Backups done by connecting usb drive and using in built backup task. One drive sits in garage. The other backup drive sits in locker at work.

There is no need to use SSH, the simplest and easiest approach is to simply follow the steps above and view the status from the GUI in storage manager.
