Been using Universal Media Server for the past two years but since their latest version 6.*.* not longer works on the latest Mac OS 10.11.* all to do with java (I and others have posted in their forums with no result). All my storage and streaming is done from my Mac either via home WiFi or Cat 6 cable I was wondering "What is the best Free Mac OS Media Server"?

I have heard that Plex is pretty good.

plex is by far the best one, they have clients on basically every platform.  not even worth considering anything else if youre using a mac as the server.

well unless you want to do go the kodi client route and setup a mysql server to share the library (what I personally do)

Plex, it's the only way forward! My plex pass is one of the best things I've spent money on in my home theatre.

Plex - It's the one.

I run Plex Home Theatre on my MacMini (it's connected to my TV via HDMI for video, then via USB for an audio feed for my pre-amp) to give me an interface that my Logitech remote can drive.

The Plex server is running in the background.

Content is sitting on a HDD (attached to the MacMini) as well as on a USB 3.0 HDD that's plugged into my router.

Ditto everyone else. I have Plex server running on my 2008 Mac Pro, with Plex Home Theatre client on my little Windows HTPC and the Plex app on my AppleTV4. I don't think any of it cost me anything - perhaps a couple of bucks for the ATV app, but the rest was free. You don't have to get the Plex pass but it adds many features.
