I currently use a Windows HTPC in the lounge with the TV Server in another room.  I'm thinking of replacing the HTPC with a 4K video device and also signing up to Netflix.

Can I replace the HTPC with perhaps Nvidia Shield or Apple TV and somehow access live/recorded TV via the Mediaportal TV Server?

Do they both handle MKV and MP4 videos, and music (flac,m4a,mp3) on networked drives?

Thanks.

Via Plex it can. There used to be a media portal channel to add to Plex. I should know I based my nextpvr one on it.

Not sure if they have something for loading recordings into Plex, or if it just access to media portal recordings from within the channel.

Other option is for either device to have a media portal app, or at the very least a network media player where you just play the video file natively

Kodi can from memory, or at least it can access a nextpvr server.
Only problem is Kodi isn’t in the App Store and you have to install it via your computer with a USB C cable.
I use dvblogic tvserver and their app on my Apple TV but you do have to pay for their tvserver software.

Pretty sure Kodi / SPMC can do what you want it to do.

Kinda interesting that you are still running Mediaportal - given Kodi added Live TV a couple of years back now i.e. Frodo? I say this as used to use MP - but found my way back to Kodi and then SPMC - which for Android based devices is a must IMO.

So it might be worthwhile researching to see if Kodi/SPMC might meet your needs - and with a Shield both are available without any jigglery pokery required - unlike Apple devices.

Didn’t they only add live tv via other servers like nextpvr and mediaportal. Rather than native live tv like Plex is doing.

Ahh...good point - you do need a backend - like Mediaportal :)

Looks like Kodi (or SPMC) will do the trick on an Nvidia Shield.  Apparently a Mac is required to install Kodi on the new 4K Apple TVs, and I don't have one.

Thanks all for suggestions.
