Now and then my HTPC will have no sound. Looking at Control Panel Sound it shows "HD Audio (Disconnected)".

If I open Device Manager and Disabled then Enable the HD Audio device sound comes back ok.

Any one seen this? I found a reference on an AMD forum that this could be a conflict with a motherboard sound, so I will check this out.

I am working on the assumption you are using an ATI based video card and using the HD audio from that? Anyway, if you are try disabling the onboard audio in the bios. That should ensure there are no conflicts as to the default audio device.

Yes, that's right. I will do it later, have to plug a keyboard seeing this is a HTPC and all, with no keyboard...

I had a similary frustrating thing, but with a nvidia gt220 and hdmi out. Ive since got a nvidia ion board, I still couldnt get hdmi audio out through that, well when i say no audio I mean anything other than stereo. I had to switch to the built in optical out and its been fine since then.

not much help but just my experiances

I tried xp/linux/win7

Sorry im not going to be much help either. But i have the same problem occasionaly, i havnt pinpointed as to what causes it, but pretty sure the hdmi link to my tv goes down when i RDP into the machine. Not only do i lose sound, but also when i move the mouse to my extended display (TV) there is no cursor present (although it is there as i can drag things).
Havnt had the time to figure it out, as you have found, i disable and re-enable the hdmi audio and it works again.

Well, since disabling the on board digital audio I haven't seen this problem again. HDMI sound out has been quite solid in the last week now.
