I would have thought a current gen i5 with K processor would be a great option.

My board and cpu below works beautifully.  At the lower end and possibly superseeded now but does everything I need.  I've only got a 5.1 setup but it seems as if it will do all the HD audio formats too.  Even has a serial header which I presume will work with a Jaycar reader if needed (haven't been able to test it here in Dubai though)

+1 on the above setup, I have exactly the same Motherboard/CPU. Plays Blu-ray perfectly too.

So, I would assume a 2nd generation Core i3 or Core i5 would be perfect.

I just picked up the DH67CL for my new workstation. It has dual (DVI/HDMI) out, S/PDIF and integrated Intel HD graphics.

I am not sure how well you will do offloading graphics decoding to the integrated chip but I run Arch so don't follow Win7 development/graphics capabilities.

They just came back in stock to most NZ suppliers: http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=782380

You could have a look at the DH57JG motherboard. It's mini-ITX form factor so you could get a very small and discrete case but yet its still a socket 1156.

I really need to check before I post. I was under the impression that the k had intergrated graphics while the non K did not. Turns out the k has the HD 3000 while the non K still has HD 2000. Although I know the K is targeted at overclocking it was the integrated graphics which I was suggesting it for.

The k series chips has the hd3000 gpu which is much better than the hd2000. Having said that though, I have just built an i3 2100 with one of these http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=14585 and it runs fantastically well. I haven't tried a lot of 1080p content on it yet though.

I wouldn't bother with an i5 cpu in an htpc unless you plan on it doing a lot of encoding work as well

Do you mind explaining why overclocking the h67 would be fail? My understanding was that the i5 second gen was very good for overclocking?

Dont go intel intergrated if you want proper 24p playback.

I think he means - why would you need an overclocked CPU in a HTPC. I would have to agree as overclocking would just add more heat and not really add any benifits as HTPC isnt really CPU intensive.

i5 k series is good for overclocking. But H67 chipset doesn't support any overclocking.
