Been on Fibre with xnet for the past 2 years, no issues with anything n thought i would look for a better deal.
Read up on SNAP and thought they had some good deals so I joined up on the 50/20 100GB plan before Christmas.
Naturally the connection of the router via Chorus/Visionstream had a few hiccups but finally connected and thats when the real issues started.
From the most annoying ..............

1- Gmail using Outlook 2010 - Can't send Mail
I've checked the settings, switching it to POP (was on IMAP) even creating a new profile in Win 7
I did notice that SNAP's Outgoing Mail Server Ports: 587 / 465 are the same as Gmail's, could that be the problem?
ANNOYING RATING 5/5

2- Timeouts, I see someone mentioned that FB pages are loading slow and with some issues
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=90&topicid=139010
ditto for me and especially when i type searches in the google search box in firefox as well, I have to click on refresh a couple of times for the pages to load, I'no expert so haven't mucked around the settings in the Fritzbox.
ANNOYING RATING 5/5

3- For some reason, my speeds on Speed Test can range from a high of 48/40 to 9/9 bearing in mind my plan is the 50/20 one. It's like some days they just go hahaha u can go slow today!! https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3247599337 https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3256640783 https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3256556458

ANNOYING RATING 4/5

4- Call Waiting allows you to answer the call but DISCONNECTS the 1st caller and will DISCONNECT the 2nd caller when you try to switch back to the 1st caller.
Rang Support and they asked if they was another phone i could try and i said yes and yip happening on both phones and its turns out according to the Support guy that Uniden phones have a problem and asked if I had another phone...seriously who in this day has 3 different phones in their house! I wasn't very happy at that stage and said I hope they didn't expect me to go and buy a new phone! At this stage, he said he would have to go ask Voice support but they aren't back till Monday..sheeshhhhh

ANNOYING RATING 4/5 I'm seriously thinking of cancelling my contract with them, they have a early termination of $499.00 but the way I see it, they aren't providing the service they said they would.

When did you had problems with Google Mail? Google services have been up and down since last night and still have problems today. The fact they use the same ports is not a problem as this is something on server side.

Speedtests aren't really a good indicator when high speed results are involved, because they are influenced by interconnections, server configuration and other factors. Unless you are always using the ISP's own speed test server I'd say results are consistent with what you can get.

Are these tests over WiFi or an ethernet connection?

Pretty unlikely to be an ISP fault; you know that Gmail had an outage today right?  Check and double check your settings would be my advice here.

Is it at peak times (eg. evening) that you're getting slow results?  Are you using Wi-fi or a wired connection?

I'd suggest waiting to see what can be done here, it sounds like just a setting in the fritz!box needs adjusting for your handset maybe.

Yeah, Google Mail is all borked at the moment so probably unrelated.

Try disabling IPv6 if you're having Facebook issues etc.

Speedtests, it looks like you're using Snap's server but that kind of variation between you and Snap on fibre would suggest either Wi-fi interference (Uniden cordless phones are horrible for causing this) or the computer you're testing from is a bit slow (speedtest.net is Flash based and gives very wrong/inconsistent results on slower PCs or ones with old flash versions).

Uniden phones are not DECT GAP compliant so if you're trying to pair them with the Fritz!Box cordlessly that'll be an issue. They also don't send DTMF right which may be causing issues with VoIP as well. And they run on 2.4GHz (why!?!?!) so interfere with Wi-fi like nobody's business.

Only for a brief time they made 2.4Ghz phones, as did other manufacturers, and it was before Wi-Fi was very popular.  Any recent models (last 5 years) will be 1.8 Ghz.

**gmail using outlook 2010 problem as soon as changed over to SNAP 1+ week ago, so its not like it was working after the switch over to SNAP n then went down a few days later
i noticed that emails were coming in but not sending, it'll just sit in the outbox, but now i can eliminate the same port numbers as a potential factor - thks
have gone through settings 100%

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
Requires SSL:Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465 or 587
Requires SSL: Yes
Requires authentication: Yes
Use same settings as incoming mail server

**the timeouts occur more on the Ethernet connected PC rather than the WIFI devices, once again started happening as soon as I connected with SNAP
I can see my Network Icon (Bottom Right) would loose connection and pick it up again a few secs later, once again never happened before. But i can download a large file >500MB and game online for 2 hours and it's ok but browsing not so, have to keep refreshing the page, they say it's my PC but I think not.....

**Speedtest I always select the SNAP server in CHCH, and i only run the speedtest from the Ethernet PC, just did another and its back to

https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3256738180 ---(9/9)

had this one below only 30 mins ago
https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3256640783 ---(46/43)

doubt it's PC performance related as I'm running I7 3.4Ghz 8GB RAM GTX780 with Samsung Evo SSD and yes flash is up to date

**"Uniden phones are not DECT GAP compliant" ??? sorry not sure but the one I'm using is this one here, it's got the words DECT on the phone and one would assume that it's DECT compliant..not sure about the GAP part hahaha
uniden dect 3015

appreciate the feedback/suggestions guys and to "nakedmolerat" ..YES normally that's my mantra but i thought how hard would it be to switch Fibre providers....hence this post for pontential "switchers" like me

Use the following for gmail.
I use these settings all the time.
Personally I dont use IMAP on outlook as they dont play nicely. I suggest WLM or Thunderbird if you want to use IMAP

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
Requires SSL:Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires SSL
smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
Requires SSL: Yes
Requires authentication: Yes
Use same settings as incoming mail server

I hope that gets you up and running.
Regards
John

Uniden have always made the world's worst phones. I would never recommend ever buying one.

Their new ones butcher the DECT standard and I still don't think they make any phones that support GAP.

As for the disconnect part of the PTC standard defines the duration of a TBR required for call waiting. From memory this is 300ms-800ms. Presumably what your Uniden phone is using it outside the settings of the Fritz!box.

I too would never use IMAP on Outlook. It's a horrible solution. It's a shame Google discontinued ActiveSync support as IMHO ActiveSync is by far the best solution for syncing email and contacts.

Was still having issues with units bought last year. They claimed to be 5.8GHz, but upon doing research it was using 5.8GHz in one direction and 2.4GHz in the other (not documented anywhere). Really weird.
Never had any issues with Panasonic who are the other 'common' brand, never seen any non-DECT from them.

Can with absolute certainty say that Snap won't be doing anything wrong here. They don't do any "mangling" of data on the way in or out. (some ISPs block you using any SMTP servers but their own, for example)

That sounds to me like DNS issues. Are you using Snap's DNS servers or some other ones?
Other thing is perhaps MTU related but that shouldn't be an issue on UFB.

Yeah, Uniden have never made any phones GAP compliant. What that means is that although they use the DECT technology for voice etc., they're not compatible with any non-Uniden products - they do things their own proprietary way rather than the standardised way. See if you can borrow someone's Panasonic as they're completely compliant.

Something is very wrong, either with your PC or something connection-related. Geekzone is pretty blazing fast.

sbiddle: Uniden have always made the world's worst phones. I would never recommend ever buying one.

Amen. Constant cause of RAs at SnapperNet. Anybody calling with Wifi dropouts our first question was "do you have soundproofed internal walls?" followed by "have you got a Uniden phone?".

sbiddle: Their new ones butcher the DECT standard and I still don't think they make any phones that support GAP.

Correct, still zero GAP compliance. Can't even do a basic "can make/receive calls only" pair with a non-Uniden base.

sbiddle: I too would never use IMAP on Outlook. It's a horrible solution. It's a shame Google discontinued ActiveSync support as IMHO ActiveSync is by far the best solution for syncing email and contacts.

It always amazes me just how bad IMAP is in Outlook. And yes, Gmail ending ActiveSync was horrible as it's simply the best solution for realtime email, and Google didn't even have to pay licensing for it.

What router did you use with WXC before switching to Snap!?

Do you still have it - depending on model, you may be able to swap it in place of the Fritzbox, in order to confirm if it is a config or other problem with your router.

EDIT: Probably wouldn't want to set up VoIP on it, but may be a good way of isolating where the problem lies with your network connectivity. It's quite likely your use of Uniden phones is contributing to your phone issues though.

freitasm: I think the "read this 1st" in the subject is a bit of a stretch as I am not convinced this is an ISP problem.

Agreed - it's certainly possible this is an RSP problem, but in all likelihood every other Snap! user would be up in arms if issues such as this were widespread. More likely to be CPE related  - maybe update the thread title once it becomes clearer where the issue lies.
