what is in the phone to make it know it is a 2D model?  Is it built into the ROM?

My N5 is from WHS, it was covered in 2D stickers on the outside of the box when I got it, and it definitely got 4.4.4 delivered to it OTA

Yabanize:
2DegreesCare: Hi guys

We're expecting 4.4.4 to be fully released within the next 2 weeks.

Cheers

So 2degrees does have to modify/test it before release?

You mean the ones you sell aren't  bog standard but have carrier embellishments??

Wow, very interesting! My N5 was bought from WHS and got ota 4.4.4. I'm not with 2 degrees though.
Is that the difference?

Still, doesn't looked good that the only network that actually sells the Nexus 5 won't have the Android update until over a month after it was released, while the other networks are releasing the update on non-Google phones.

Hopefully this won't be the case when major updates are released. If that happens I pick up a $5 Sim card from another network.

good question

does anyone else not receiving it OTA have no SIM or another Telco SIM in?

My N5 has no SIM and got 4.4.4  Maybe some N5s slipped through into the 2D stock and not imaged with the 2D ROM

The more troubling matter is that N5 can be branded, and why 2 feels the need to brand them thus introducing unnecessary man-in-middle. Just sell them the way Google intended ffs!

FYI, I got mine from Google Play Australia and now running latest CM11 nightlies.

I don't think they are branded in any way, my 4.4.2 looked totally stock. I just don't think 2Deg approved the update.

Just for reference, I  bought my Nexus 5 from a 2Degrees store and promptly put in my Vodafone SIM ... it was updated to 4.4.4 as soon as it was out.  Phone came with no 2Degrees branding at all.

If it's not branded them why does 2D need to approve the update when the rest of the world gets the updates ??

the only reason i can think of is the nfc stuff 2degrees do with snapper or whoever it is. there must be configuration changes needed for that to happen, as you have to be with 2degree's.

Carrier specific update push policies implemented by Google on behalf of those carriers would be my guess.

Pretty much. We have to ensure it is compatible for our unique services like Touch2Pay

Thanks for your patience in the meantime.

Which would be more understandable if you could actually use Touch2Pay with the Nexus5 - hopefully 2degrees are taking this time to include the Nexus5 into their Touch2Pay scheme rather than just making sure that it can't be spoofed on the N5.

Blocking a major security update on a phone which I bought primarily because of it's immediate updates is a pretty big deal.  Judging by this, it looks like I will have to change to a different carrier before the version L release if I want to receive it within the first couple of months - pretty ironic as one of the reasons the Nexus was released unlocked in the US was to circumvent problems caused by carriers blocking/altering updates.

Completely agree with Tieke's comment above. I've been using Nexus phones on 2Degrees since 2012 and have never encountered delays with updates. What went wrong with 4.4.4? And why would some with 2degrees sims in Nexus 5s have received the update and others not?

Had thought the delay was because my N5 is from the US Google Play store, but clearly that's not the case.

It'd be great to hear 2Degrees provide a better explanation and allay any concerns about 5.0 being delayed.
