Hi Guys 

I recently got talked into transfering from my data pack acc on snap to moving accross to there unlimited service. 
I was also told there was no difference as users are not pooled or connected or managed any differently than I was under my data pack.
I noticed today that all my latency's have increased by + 10ms to snap.net.nz 16ms to 26ms now and also to login.worldoftanks-sea.com 170ms instead of 160ms
Is there any chance this is related to moving to unlimited data.

I'm on snap unlimited.  Have not noticed a performance change, though we don't game.  Your two servers listed above give us ping averages (across 10 tests) of 20ms and 140ms.

When did you switch over to unlimited? If it was in the early hours of the 31st, it looks like the changeover could be related. And if it is related, it could mean that Snap are handling unlimited traffic differently to normal traffic, and that's sunbathing they said they wouldn't do.

If you changed over any day except the 31st, it could just be an unhappy coincidence.

I currently have the same 10 ms increase on my UFB capped plan. It also happened a couple of times in mid-June going up for a few days then back to normal again. When I got into contact with Snap they said that nothing was wrong and a 10 ms increase was acceptable. Shortly after that it righted itself and went back to normal until now.

Are you sure? A DLM change would add 8ms.

I too have the world of tanks site in my ping monitoring, looks quite different from yours.

Also did a ping to your login.worldoftanks-sea.com and getting a 144ms consistently.

on Snap Unlimited 100/50 UFB in Chch here

thankfully a 10ms difference is too small for a human to be able to notice.  (1/100th of a second)

I mean, maybe if you were a pro-gamer you might be able to pick it up, but otherwise I'm pretty sure it is impossible for the human brain to see that difference.

Wierd, it back to normal at 6.30am

@Nonprayingmantis, its wierd that 10ms like you say is 1/100th of a sec. but even though i am nowhere near a pro gamer, 
you are right I would not notice 10ms but I feel there is a difference between 160ms and say 200.

Given that things are back to normal now, I'd recommend doing a couple of traceroute runs to the server to see what the hops and their timings are. That way, if the latency increase ever comes back, you can compare routes and timings and see where things differ.

It's quite possible that something did change, maybe the routing within Snap's own network or maybe something upstream, and that's gone back to normal now. The only real way to tell is with the routes.

Mine returned to normal around the same time as yours. For my connection the latency increase was in the first hop both this time and last time the issue occurred. I'm in Otago, so expect there was some change in the link between here and Christchurch compared to those on Snap further north.

Hi All,

Sorry for the delay, Yes I can put you out of your misery and answer this! On our primary link to to Otago (From Christchurch) it takes a eastern route, I.E Christchurch - Ashburton - Timaru and so on to Dunedin. our secondary route takes a completely diverse path from a secondary DC in Christchruch across to Darfield, Methven .... Queenstown .... Invercargill ... Then to the secondary DC in Dunedin. (.... denoting other towns)

Our Network detected a potential issue on the primary path and diverted to the secondary path (this takes about 10ms and happens automatically) while we were investigating the issue we kept the data on the secondary path, this would explain your additional latency.

Note this is more of a ladder, so it might not be the exact route, but it would have been traveling somewhat more inland than normal.

In almost all cases an additional 10ms of latency should not be too noticeable, in some cases like if a north bound fibre is cut to Greymouth you will see a much higher than normal jump as data then takes an east coast path down to Christchurch and across Arthur's Pass instead of a direct route via Nelson.

Another note, there will be no difference between Unlimited and other plans.
