So, I forgot to turn data off in my partner's phone at the airport, as she left for a week-long visit to Rarotonga to see family.
I could also have turned on Spend Control, which I've used successfully in the past. I didn't do that because I was so sure I'd turned off data. I'm the geek in the house and that was my job.  I thought I'd done it but I screwed up. Mea culpa and all that.

Her bill arrived today. 67MB which cost $670. Ten times the usual monthly cost.

My lady is quite upset but adamant that no data-using applications were knowingly used, just photo's taken and texts (non-MMS) sent and received.

The LG G2 Mini reports on data use by application. Here's a screen capture covering the dates in question.

All this going on in the background!

Lesson 1: Turn off mobile data.
I'm off to the tattoo shop to get this written in reverse letters on my forehead.
Lesson 2: Just in case, turn on Spend Control anyway. This will help if data is accidentally turned on again.
Lesson 3: If you do make this error, do it with Vodafone or Spark, not 2degrees. It will cost you half as much.   Three 25MB data packs with Vodafone cost $300. Spark for Pay Monthly customers charges $5/MB so $335 for 67MB.

We are both happy 2degrees customers, particularly about calling and data value for money. Except when in Raro ...

Does the phone have an option to disable data when roaming?  I have mine set this way all the time.

Hi graemeh. Yes data roaming can be turned off. You just have to have the presence of mind to do it....cry

I posted this story as a warning and a reminder. I know what the answers are.

Disappointed that 2degrees charges double the other guys when you're in Raro, though.

Ouch.
My phone has Disable Data when Roaming turned on all the time.

I imagine with 2 degrees however (I'm with Vodafone), that could get problematic when roaming to Vodafone sites in NZ.

Exactly - VodaNZ is a roaming partner for out of 2D Coverage areas.

Oh dear, it hurts when you make a mistake like that.  I have mine turned off for that reason.

The positive is that it could have been far worse.

Some phones, like the Galaxy S4, have two settings, one to disable national roaming and one to disable international roaming which solves this problem.

I'm usually a bit worried about this option (although I have it set). Anyone know if it s at all possible for this setting to fail?

I've never had it fail but I'm on prepay so the cost of it failing is limited to my usually small balance.  Also, I normally buy a local SIM ASAP, my record so far is 5 minutes after leaving the plane to getting a local SIM installed with a data package.

Someone I know has just racked up a bill 3x that big, because why tell your IT Dept when you're going over seas and plan to use your mobile data??

Well done for standing tall and admitting your mistake, rather than blaming the operator like so many others.

What do you know, I found a bill shock iconsealed..

So the final insult was to find that 1GB was available with a local SIM on prepay, for a total cost of $75. Guess what we'll be doing next time.///

There endeth the lesson...frown

Thanks to everyone for your input.

Plus $25 for a SIM if you don't already have a Cook Islands Telecom SIM...
