For the last 2 to 3 weeks (was all good before this), a friend on 2Degree Mobile (was ported a couple of years ago from Telecom 027) (Handset is a Samsung S4) is having a problem and has asked me for help. Her problem is she hears her own voice back about half a second delayed when she talks on her mobile.

I did some testing such as... Changed settings to Auto 3G/2G (was on Auto 4G), and I called both my landline (Parnell landline, with handset in Parnell also) and another mobile (Spark) and put her SIM in an older alternative handset (a Vodafone model 858Smart - non 4G). In all cases the loud echo (as loud as the person she is talking to!) is there. With the call to the Spark mobile the echo was not so obvious, but was still there.

The problem is not location dependent either, as it occurs at my home and at her work in Ellerslie.

I had a quick Google search to see if this is a known problem, but I found nothing.

Has anyone got any suggestions or advice before we lodge a fault with 2Degrees?

I get something similar, but I am on Spark with that particular phone. Usually I am close to hills when I notice it so always assumed it was some sort of signal bounce.

By any change your friend is using a custom cover? Which could be covering the  Noise Suppression microphone?
If using a case cover, removing it fix the issue?
In the dialler screen I believe there is a noise suppression enhancement button as well..try toggling that.
Also you could turn down the in call volume

I've been having the same issue over the same sort of period on 2degrees with a 1st gen Moto G.

Thanks for that. However, the problem also exists on a different mobile, without a cover, that's not the problem. Additionally, no settings have been changed.

Nice to know we aren't alone. I wonder how many others are "in the 'echo' club"!!?

It could be the person they are ringing has them on speaker I get that as does my son

Thanks for that, but no, I was careful to keep my distance from the other phone and avoid using the speakerphone, as I know this can be a cause of echoing.

Simply not possible.

Echo can (really) only occur at two points in a modern phone network - when D/A conversion occurs, or when a speaker is lo loud at the other end that it actually loops back.
