Anyone else having this issue?

 

At about 9am this morning I got alerts that  connections were failing to certain sites..

 

It seems I can access many NZ sites but I can't get to sites like cnn.com, bbc.co.uk, imdb.com.. just times out...

No problems on 2 degrees fiber from Wellington right now, and it's been fine generally all day. Been here since midday.

Thanks.. I had thought if others were having the issue it would have popped up on their site... but nice to know its probably just me..

 

Spent 30 minutes talking to support and they just kept insisting on restarting the modem.. then reset it (argh).

 

I can't get to a single overseas site.. but can access anything in NZ without issue.

There might have been a abnormal traffic/DDoS on your IP and they blocked your international connectivity.

I just called them back and mentioned someone had suggested this.. the support person went to talk to an engineer came back 2 minutes later to say mu IP had been subject to a DOS attack.

 

Issues a new IP.  Problem solved.

 

 

 

2 Degrees need to notify customers if they are just taking their international access.   Support team should be notified too and should be checking this first before resetting a customers modem.. 

 

 

 

Anyway thanks for a point in the right direction :)

what's up with that? why aren't they nullrouting the IP's doing the DDoS? Or at least you know...emailing/leaving a message if theyre going to block connectivity?

Yeah... not sure what the standard way of dealing with DOS attacks over ISP's is or even if there is a standard.
if there set response is to move to a new IP once a DOS is made they should just do it.  Then at least when i did reset my modem if would have fixed it straight away.

 

I signed up for a static IP as i needed that a while ago, now I don't... If I still required it, I'd be a bit peaved if they just wanted to move me onto a new IP because of  DOS attack..

 

As you say, they should be just null routing..   I guess it is easier to remove one IP that remove xxx amount of IP's attacking - but you'd think they would have a an active system that is blocking IP's making attacks....

 

I'm just glad to have access back...hopefully they can improve the way they deal with DOS attacks going forward and at the bare minimum letting customers know.

 

My mother for example  had this happened to her would have struggled to explain what is going on to 2degrees and I wonder how long she might have missed out on connectivity while she tried to deal with support.
