Is it definitely text messages? i.e. if they're sent from an iPhone, I wonder if they're trying to send an iMessage and not failing over to SMS...

Various devices and networks involved. I'm Android on a Nexus 5X, but I'm missing some texts sent from Samsungs and iPhones. And the issue is quite sporadic - I get one text from someone, but won't get one later on in the same day. Or I won't get any, but then test it 5 mins later and the text comes through fine.

Can't rule out my phone has suddenly gone spastic either, but before doing a factory reset on my phone where nothing has definitely changed on it in the last week to suspect anything there, I was hoping to find out if it was at the network layer.

Interesting, my partner and I are in  the same boat... about 3 weeks ago, I started to not receive all sms messages she sent, and they disappeared in to the ether.

Partner is with 2degrees and I'm on corporate vodafone... interesting to know what the OPs networks are.

I'm 2degrees. I have instances where the other person is also on 2degrees, and instances where the other person is not.

Have you tried a different handset?

There is a known bug in Android that I think is still not fixed that can result in text messages not being received.

There is an app that can help avoid it:

I had an issue with text messages some time ago that was due to multi part text messages (i.e. longer than 140 chars). Any chance the delayed ones fall into this category?

@johnr (formerly of this parish but cast out by angry and bewildered townsfolk) helped diagnose and resolve that particular problem. Ultimate fix was an OS upgrade though.

The text messages are sometimes never received, not delayed. I only find out about them because people will text me later saying I never texted them back, or I get a Facebook Message asking why I'm not replying to that text message and they send me a screenshot of sent messages on their phone that I never received.

And none of the instances reported, where the messages disappear, were messages long enough to be considered multi-part. I did think of this myself too, but checked the content of the messages that disappeared and none were long.

I'm running Nougat 7.1.2 on my Nexus 5X, and that's been around for a few months now, but this issue has only started since the start of September. When you Google around bug reports for not receiving some text messages they all eventually say check with your carrier, so that's what I was hoping to do.

I'd love to try another handset to see if the problem still happens, but I don't have one. I'm hoping my PM with details gets to a tech who can see if the messages are getting delivered or not and that will answer everything.

Follow up time:

Big thank you to @SaltyNZ for getting to the bottom of my troubles.

Turns out the messages are marked as being successfully sent out by 2degrees, and it's my phone that's dropped the ball and not getting some messages.

I can cross off carrier from my troubleshooting list and now need to figure out if it's the stock Messages app or Android Nougat or if it's factory reset time.

Thank you for everyone else's suggestions too.

My phone dropped the MMS settings and cause me to start consistently-occasionally missing messages. A multipart text can only be 3 messages long (if my memory serves me correctly) and when people went over this limit their phone auto-converts it to a MMS. So in my case when someone got a bit long winded, I didn't receive their message.

They can be up to 256 pieces long... if your phone is converting to MMS at 3 messages long that could get expensive real quick.

I had the same problem a little while ago. I could send the wife a text, but didn't get her response.

Check that you haven't somehow added the person your not receiving texts from to your spam list\harassment list

Heh, I spent a whole week having people complain that I was sending them straight to voicemail and not responding to their texts before realising I'd somehow turned on Do Not Disturb...

Definitely not on a naughty list as I get messages from the same person later on. I've also just double checked my settings just in case.

Looks like it might be Android Messages to blame for my missing texts: http://www.androidauthority.com/android-messages-notifications-messed-up-802713/
