I moved my wife and my mobile connections from Skinny to 2degrees.  Now, both of us cannot call overseas via Skype, using a 09 889xxxx number.

 

I called 2degrees and they said they do not allow this because they do not support VOIP service.  However, from my perspective, I am just calling a standard 09 / AKL number.

 

This is a problem for us as we have elderly relatives living overseas, and they do not have smartphones or computers.  So we need to call them via their landlines or mobile.  Now I cannot call the 09 889xxxx number using our mobiles which is a major headache.

 

Why 2degress is doing this?

 

There are things I like about 2degress, like Data Share.  However, not allowing me to call that 09 889xxxx number is a PITA, and I think it is unfair from a customer's perspective, as I just want to call a local number.

 

Can anyone helps?

I think that agent could have just been confused. 

 

Next time you call 2degrees just leave the Skype bit out of the conversation to save the hassle. It's a local number, 2degrees needs to connect your call to that number and anything else beyond that is up to Skype. 

 

What error message are you getting when you attempt to call it?

I'm confused. You make Skypeout calls to PSTN numbers directly from the Skype app - why are you doing this via a Skype dial in number? That's simply going to deliver far worse voice quality and add latency to the call.

There is no error message.  2degrees simply drop the call / does not connect the call at all.

My wife does not use the app because the subscription was paid under my Skype ID, and we do not want to use the app with the same ID on two different devices.  Yes, it is possible to signout from the app, but it is a hassle to sign back in when needed.

 

The call quality using the Skype dial in number is not bad at all.  Voice quality and latency was still fine (when it works when I was with Skinny).

At least one of 2degrees' agents called the number and noticed it is a Skype dial in number, because it said "Welcome to Skype..., blah blah".  Then another agent emailed me saying VOIP is not supported.

If I remember correct I don't think VodafoneNZ opened the Skype range either due to security / fraud issues

Just checked NAD.  The 09 889xxxx range is assigned to Symbio Wholesale NZ Limited, with a LICA of Auckland and with a local calling area of Auckland.  The number range was assigned on 1st August 2007.

Maybe the number range has not been opened in the IN then as you say the call is been dropped during the call setup

 

I would say they are not blocking the range @SaltyNZ might be able to add some value here

We would not be blocking it intentionally, I don't think. Every 'normal' number range will be open. Some special numbers are not - most 0900 numbers for example - but any normal LICA should be fine. If you want to PM me the number I can have a look on Tuesday (I'm on leave tomorrow).

Both POB and myself have tried calling the number. I personally tried both from cellular and from VoWifi (which is a different core, so conceivably might give a different result). We get various results:

 

  • Sometimes the calls fails instantly
  • Sometimes it rings once and then fails
  • Sometimes we get recorded messages that vary between 'You don't have Skype credit'; or
  • 'We don't recognise the mobile number you're calling from ...'

The fact that we can hear these Skype recorded announcements indicates that 2degrees has successfully connected the mobile call to the 09 number (and likewise, you won't hear ring unless the far end tells us to do so), so it sounds like something is wrong at the other end. You said:

Are you forwarding this Skype number to somewhere else? Are you sure you don't simply need to top it up?

A big thanks to @SaltyNZ, @2degreesCare, and @NickMack.  My wife and I can call the 09 889 xxxx number now (most of the time).

 

As @SaltyNZ mentioned,

 

1. Sometimes the calls fails instantly
2. Sometimes it rings once and then fails
3. 'We don't recognise the mobile number you're calling from ...'

 

 

 

Until this evening, I hit problem 1 and 2 all the time.  Since this evening, most of the times the call gets through (basically scenario 3 shown above, which means it is good and working).  Sometimes I get scenario 1 or 2, but if I call again usually I can get through.

 

I am at home now so probably it is only using a single cell site.  I will try other locations tomorrow and report back.  =-)
