While 2degrees owes your wife nothing out of this, if she calls and asks nicely they'll very likely give her something so long as she hasn't had large credits/similar issues before.

Item: Whilst your statements on the situation itself are true, I genuinely wonder what value you felt you were bringing by smugly declaring to the forum at large that "you have no sympathy" for someone who is upset, stressed, feeling foolish and lonely and is now going to struggle to enjoy a solo trip they have been looking forward to for quite some time due to an honest mistake? You could have just stopped after your first couple of lines of feedback (though I appreciated the help with the basic maths) but you really needed to ensure that everyone knew just how un-sympathetic you were. Rest assured, your position is very clear - thanks!

Because someone needed to rub it in and to feel superior. And frankly, he seems determined to keep rubbing it in, which is distasteful to say the least.

Am I the only person that rings my banks and telco informing them that I am going overseas?  I do this to confirm they won't block my credit/bank cards and to confirm roaming and spend controls are in place.

I am currently enjoying 2Degrees rubbish customer service and I personally cannot wait to post the audio recordings where they have lied multiple times to my partner on several occasions.

But in relation to this post, I have been on the phone on 2 to 3 different occasions with 2Degrees where they have pushed an authentication SMS to the designated phone number and the text did not come through the first time and in some cases second time (note: they never did in case you're thinking it was a delay).

So before we get on the "but they sent a text" bandwagon, some times those texts never make it to the user's device. Probably because the 2Degrees systems are sh*t.

Well, no they're not, but even so - that's why we have had spend control since 2010.

Did you know sometime in the last year 2Degrees decided to introduce a minimum $20 spend control on monthly accounts?

That means if you have a plan for $30 per month with spend control turned on (to protect yourself against roaming, for example) the minimum "spend control" you can set is $20 over and above your $30 monthly spend? So the new "maximum" you can spend (including your plan) is $50 per month?

Previously you could set this limit to $1 - which was perfect for roaming and kids plans. Thanks 2Degrees! /s

I'm sure @SaltyNZ knows about this as he is the design architect for the IN / VAS

Yes, I did know that. The complaints from people who had bought value packs but set their spend control too low to pay for them outweighed the number of people who were upset by the $20 minimum. Did you know that if you already had it set at $1 it would stay at $1 until you changed it?

And if a $20 roaming bill is enough to break the bank then it's always possible to take a prepaid SIM with you, or buy a local one when you get there.

Don't be condescending. It is not even roaming I'm talking about. That just plays a part. I'm talking about $20 x 5 kids, per month is a lot of money and a pain in the ass to have to reconcile every month. We also swap sim cards when travelling, but guess what, when you do that, service SMS's are sent (at $1 per piece) whenever you do the sim card dance on iOS devices. Because those service SMS's from Apple are sent by the device, there's nothing you can do about it.. except put in place a $1 spend control which blocks it from happening.

PS. The $1 doesn't stay if you change plans. Even if the CSR promised you 'EVERYTHING will be EXACTLY the same'. undecided

Same thing happened on Vodafone with credit limits customers would set it to $1.00 and wonder why they would be credit limit barred all the time

The service SMSes from Apple are free even while roaming, and even if they weren't, we don't charge $1/SMS while roaming for anyone, anywhere.

I've cleaned up the thread from some off-topic and frankly rude replies. Please keep it on-topic and note that the 2degrees staff on here are volunteers. If you've got an issue it is best to call them up.

Lets just wait for @2degreesCare here. Also, OP as you've mentioned you're not the account holder so your wife will likely need to get in touch. Most providers have a bill shock process so I'd say 2degrees should be able to get this sorted. I don't think you'll get an actual reply yourself due to the privacy act.

Also in regards to a few comments here there is a SMS that is sent explaining charges when you arrive to a country overseas. I fully understand how a person could get a data charge at casual rates since there is still roaming in some areas to Vodafone so many people have data roaming enabled on their phones. But I am sure in this instance 2degrees should be able to help.

I can also confirm that 2degrees send out an SMS with the roaming charges. Here is the one that I received last time I went overseas.

Welcome to Samoa! Your std roaming rates are $2.44/min to make and $1/min to receive, 79c/txt, 10c/MB. Or, grab our 7 day Islands Roaming Pack by txting BUY 30ISLAND to 233. For $30 you get 500MB and unlimited* calls & txts back to NZ and within Samoa. For receiving calls Standard Rates apply. T&Cs apply. *Fair Use Policy applies. For more on roaming, head to roam.2dm.co.nz for free.
