Hey guys,

I am wanting to convert my old refurbished Fritzbox 7490 into Access point cause I need to expand my networking around the house plus the new clean Fritzbox 7490 that I am currently I have already used up all the ethernet ports haha. So I need to convert my old refurbished Fritzbox 7490 into a access point.

I know creating a access point will degrade some performance but I’m okay.

Thanks and sorry for any inconvenience.

Set it to IP Client mode. It will then obtain an IP address from your main router. Configure WiFi settings. Profit.

NB, it has been ages since I configured A Fritzbox for the above.

if you have the latest updates for the Fritzbox then its even easier as they added a Mesh repeater setting under Wireless,

Common sense is not as common as you think.

The mesh repeater only works if the other device is a Fritzbox.

Once you put it in IP client mode you can use the same SSID and password as the main router so your devices don't have to reconnect instead of roaming.

Oh I see. Which port slot should I insert the refurbished Fritzbox 7490 (Access point) into? So far since I have fibre, the ONT is connected to the LAN 1 slot of the main router.

Lastly, since I'm using this access point for ONLY LAN, are there any other settings I should be adjusting?

Sorry for the inconvenience. Still new to all of this :).

Does anybody have thoughts about having a Fritzbox setup of two 7490s connected by a Ethernet backbone and then adding my old 7390 as a wifi repeater.  The 7390 only has 2.4ghz but will improve coverage.  I am not sure how to get to the settings page on the 7390 but I am guessing that I need to plug it into a 7490 or my laptop with a Ethernet cable.

Does anybody think the addition of the 7390 will mess up the mesh logic?  I think that the mesh network doesn't control which device connects to which access point, the device does that but I would like to confirm.

Thoughts appreciated.

7390 doesn't support mesh at all so it would be mesh + the 7390 as a normal access point.

I've had this configuration running for a while with 3 repeaters in a mesh configuration of my main FB7490.

Reasonably straightforward setup. Reset the second FB. Setup the first FB as you would with fibre working etc.

Then follow the instructions here for the second FB - https://en.avm.de/faqs/setting-up-the-fritzbox-as-a-mesh-repeater/

Cheers

You have two threads for the same thing, is there a reason for that?  If not i'll close one and you can continue with the other....

Same here, I have 3 X 7490 set up as a mesh. Works great.

Just follow the instructions, especially the part about pressing the WPS button. Once done the other boxes will show up with a new icon under the network on the main box. I missed that step the first time.

I now have a grand total of 4 x Fritzbox 7490s.  As tchart says you have to push the wps button on both the mesh master and the new slave.  I didn't do that with the first 7490 and thought I had mesh for a week until I realized I was missing the mesh icon in the overview page.

One of these access points is connected with eithernet and the other two are connected by 5ghz wifi which works better than I expected.  I am debating moving one of the wifi connected ones from the bedroom to the lounge.  This would allow me to have two access points in the most used area of the house (connected via eithernet) plus more eithernet ports so I can plug in my surface dock as well.  Maybe I just need five fritzboxes...

Hey,

Just got back from work sorry. I will start following the instructions now. However, one last question. For "Use a network cable to connect the "WAN" or "LAN" port on the Mesh Repeater either directly to a LAN port on the Mesh Master, or by means of a hub or switch." I'm unsure how to set this up. So far I have it set up as:

"1x Ethernet cable i- one end s connected/plugged to the LAN 4 of the "1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 MAIN". The other end of the same ethernet cable, I connected it to the LAN1 of the Access point (1 x Frtiz!Box 7490 Refurbished).

^This is right? sorry for the inconvenience.

Oh and also, I don't need to touch the DHCP such as disabling along with configure the IP address manually and under network > network settings, I do not need to select IP Client?  just double checking :D.
