The other evening Tuesday16th at about 2300 I was steaming from TV1 and my connection was turned of, did the usual checks rebooting computer and router, no help, went to ring 2 degrees, lo and behold cell phone out as well, great no communications.

 

All restored, 'connected since 17.04.2019, 01:34, 2degrees', from router log.

 

I entered a online broad band complaint/query, received the following reply -

 

'We can not comment on your mobile service, however, I can see that your modem went offline until 1:30 am'--

 

'Generally, the network company advise us of any outages but are under no obligation too and in this instance, we have not received any!''

 

I replied -- 'I am a bit confused about you not being able to comment on my mobile service as I am with your company for all our communications, (if you had looked at the previous evening I believe a similar outage occurred). I am of the opinion that this outage was due to the system being shut down by Contractors, rather than a failure, 2° notifies it's customers of pending Bills due, then there is no reason why customers cannot be advised of planned system shutdowns, in our situation and I imagine there are many other customers the same, we loose ALL our communications due to to our Home phone being tied to our Broadband, perhaps we should go back to copper wire phone connections, which would be a backward step.'

 

I got a reply back which I won't post, but basically Two Degrees runs its cell phone and broadband as separate entities with a lack of communications between them and 'The Network' Company.

 

We have VOIP home phone but the way the reply reads it's on Copper? is this some type of Con,we had a choice Copper or VOIP, and chose VOIP because of the free calling, but if it's on copper ???

 

We get text's regards pending bills, surely the same could apply to pending planned outages outages, planned ? yes because they occur when the least amount of Customers are affected.

We don't notify for planned work, no, and I don't think you'd want us to. It's not like operations take 6 month holidays between adventures. The planned work literally never stops.

 

 

Having said that, to lose broadband and cellular at at the same time suggests transmission took out the entire local area, which may not have been us at all.

@Graymond If you want a managed service then you need to pay for it, Outages happen for many reasons and planned work needs to happen

 

Comparing getting a bill notification to outages is totally nonsense, As 2degrees have 100% control over the billing platform

VOIP runs on the copper cable to your house (assuming you are on ADSL/VDSL broadband and voice connection), otherwise VOIP would run over 'fibre' if you are fibre connected. 

 

POTS = Plain Old Telephone service, which runs on copper.

Thanks very much for the replies. I thought that communications nowadays was a essential service, apparently I am wrong.

 

How would it be that if a Power Company wanted to do planned outages to carry out maintenance work etc they just turned of the power. (I can imagine your replies)

 

I also thought that we lived in a time when communications was alive and had computers to automate certain communications, apparently not so the maintenance companies, they obviously do not even tell those they contract to, this is an arrogant type attitude.

 

The problem nowadays is that we are controlled by money and profits, and time costs money.

So why the difference in our Broadband plan between VOIP and POTS when we are on POTS ?

Planned/upcoming outages are frequently posted on most ISP's network status pages, if you care to read them.

 

Voyager for example detail upcoming Chorus work where you can expect downtime of up to 30 mins https://voyager.nz/support/service-status

Oh, and you don't say what area you are in, and whether it has actually been confirmed this was a planned outage.

 

The rolling Chorus shutdowns are generally early hours of the morning, so several hours later. It's more likely this was an unplanned outage due to fibre cut, or car crashing into something somewhere. No company can advise you in advance of something they don't know is going to happen.

How strange, was today talking to a friend who had received a text from 'SPARK' advising him of a proposed outage yesterday, with expected times.
