I play World of Tanks, and sometimes need to connect to a game server in Asia. My friend on spark NZ gets 100ms ping while I get 350-400ms ping on 2degrees. Any idea why? I have the full speed fibre plan. Quite like 2degrees would be a shame to move ISP because of that.

Are you connected to your router via Ethernet or wifi?

what ip is it testing to?

where are your trace routes and pings to back up your issue?

you need to do some basic fault finding yourself and see if you can attribute it to something

could just be poor routing, or if could be something else

World of Tanks asia servers are in Singapore.

you will likely find this comes down to choose of upstream providers.

There is a very limited (and often faulty) cable that goes from aus to SG that is generally the 'best route' latency wise.

I found this info server is in Hong Kong (there is no more singapore server) ip address is 92.223.52.47. Usually when i'm in-game the ping says 350-400ms.

Yeah the routing seems a bit funky on the way back too:

via AS58453 China Mobile International Limited ??

https://lg.gcore.lu/

I'm guessing there's a config issue with some peering or they have new owners lol

Linux: A ping is not true reflection of the actual real world latency

Maybe technically correct from a Telco perspective, but the reality is customers, especially gamers, rely on it to test latency.

Also, something is clearly rotten in the state of denmark if any traffic to HK is going via NZ -> California -> Tokyo -> HK, which both the level of latency and his trace route appear to show.

Hopefully @nickmack can get it looked into and resolved for OP.

Hi Lias, All;

We have routed to the Asia via US for a number of years, Transit via Australia to Singapore is hideously expensive, it's not currently on our roadmap. We do look at this regularly and re-evaluate where we spend our investment - the reality is that a lot of services that were located / available in Singapore via services like AWS/Azure are now available in Australia, for services that dont use large CDN's and are limited to a geographic location, this may well be an issue.  There are other threads on GZ on this topic - https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=250934&page_no=2, https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=251670.

Also worth noting that ICMP traffic is de-prioritised and while it's a measure, it's not entirely useful. See -  A Practical Guide to (Correctly) - Troubleshooting with Traceroute & ICMP (ping)

I will have the team investigate if we can optimise in anyway, I can see from our smokeping monitoring (we monitor World of Tanks in Singapore already) that traffic behaviour has changed since early Saturday morning, this maybe due to an upstream change.

Nick.

For what's its worth this is a traceroute from a Slingshot UFB connection in Auckland:

Vocus seems to route via Australia. Vocus is the network underlying the Slingshot and Orcon brands.

Looking at your friend's trace above it seems they're also with Vocus (and not Spark as you mentioned earlier)? Unless that was a different friend.

Update - This is still under investigation, we are working with the content owner to see if they can offer some alternative options.

Update - An upstream provider of ours has changed a peering arrangement which is caused the increase in latency to Asia. We are investigating options around this, as previously mentioned, Routing to Asia via Transit Australia to Singapore is hideously expensive especially as most content is in AWS/Azure or CDNs accessible in Australia - https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=270180&page_no=1#2472265.

Hi there,

My boyfriend and I have been getting high ping when gaming and was wondering if anyone else is getting high ping when gaming? My league ping has suddenly gone from 40 to around 70-80. Are there any weird routing issues with 2Degrees end? Hopefully it fixes itself soon.

P.S. I've checked all my connections and made sure everything is plugged in tight and also done the usual trouble-shootings. Using ethernet too :D .

Games tried: League of legends, CSGO, Apex Legends, TF2, POE. PUBG, VRCHAT
