I get "Network Error" with a vodafone-branded Sony Ericsson G502

It's not the brand of the phone that's the issue... the *001# is a free service which only works when you are in our coverage areas - Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. If you are roaming on the Vodafone network it won't work and you will get one of those error codes appearing.
