I have to say that since this week end my speeds were restaured to normal on Snap, it is actually really good.

I get full speed up to US and Europe, I don't know what caused the slow speeds that I have experienced last 2 weeks but I hope that it will stay stable this way.

Another interesting point is that people on other ISPs using the sames routes as me (Global Gateway International) used to get better speeds on the same servers while I was experiencing problems...

Anyway when something is bad I have to say it, but similarly if something is good!

NO, it`s droped ag !!!

i mean what the hell is this, my speed is not capped btw, totally useless for playing HON atm, getting 300ping+ in every fuxkin single game. Even downloading files from RS or MU links can not reach 300k/s, is this some kind of joke or something is happening?

Hmm i might come inside and use a direct connection rather than across the wireless from the sleepout.

The ash cloud is forcing lots of people online to organize alt flights etc..Not usually this mediocre.

Probably jinxed myself haha, however tonight there is defintely a problem:

Normally im around 5 to 6 Mb/s int, but tonight, its rubbish. Not too worried though, might be okay tomorrow? In my experience, I've never had sustained international bandwidth issues.

Don't know what plan I'm on, its the 60GB one. This will be first time ever I havent hit at least 1Mb/s international down.

May try some speedtests later if I'm still awake to see what happens when all of NZ goes zzzzzz.

Inside so the results have improved..

Hmm an okay improvement but in normal instances, this time of the night should see me around at least 4 to 5 Mb/s

I noticed the speeds at my flat improved heaps before I left, I say it must be because the ADSL2+ Cabinet went fully live - Who says I go visit Snap here in Christchurch and get them to do a speedtest from their office? Also I think Ralph owes me a scone or 2.

When you're having an issue, can you quickly do a tracert to google.com? I've been looking at a couple of connections for guys at GP, and they all seem to have high/eratic ping to the first hop. Also, if you want - PM me your username/account number and I'll get it looked at.

Michael, how easy was Smoothwall to set up? Do you not worry about the power for another PC running 24/7? I also considered IP Cop. I'm mainly interested in the logging aspects, i.e. determining who used the most data; but shaping could be useful for torrent users.

Well recently, I have again experienced pretty slow speeds, I usually hit least that 1Mb/s international since this year.

Tonight:
speedtest

tracert to the same server indicates GGI:

  1     1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  home.gateway [192.168.1.1]
  2    59 ms    61 ms    57 ms  *.dynamic.snap.net.nz [*]
  3    65 ms    58 ms    70 ms  *.dynamic.snap.net.nz [*]
  4   104 ms   105 ms   106 ms  g2-0-1-174.tkbr10.global-gateway.net.nz [122.56.118.93
  5   103 ms   102 ms   102 ms  xe7-0-0-2.tkbr9.global-gateway.net.nz [203.96.120.221]
  6   241 ms   255 ms   243 ms  so6-0-3.labr5.global-gateway.net.nz [122.56.127.34]

AND to los angeles:
speedtest

This time the tracert indicates telstraclear:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  home.gateway [192.168.1.1]
  2    86 ms    75 ms    65 ms  *.dynamic.snap.net.nz [*]
  3   110 ms   137 ms   113 ms  *.dynamic.snap.net.nz [*]
  4    82 ms   153 ms    90 ms  g0-1-0-969.icore2.tspn.telstraclear.net [203.98.4.25]
  5   115 ms   381 ms   114 ms  ge-0-2-0-1.xcore1.acld.telstraclear.net [203.98.50.251]

Usually I get at least 1.5Mb/s during peek time to these servers.
I really hope that something will be done to make things work well, on the long run... :)

Smoothwall is simple to set up, and can be run off older hardware.
IP-Cop is probably recommended, as it's based off Smoothwall but has some enhancements.
