According to the link below all iPhones from the UK will be locked to the provider, although they will unlock upon request! But there are bound to be conditions to that.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937

She would have been much better buying from an Apple Store the UK as it would definitely have been unlocked then to save any of this hassle. I would never take the word of a salesperson in a store in a different country when they know you're not going to be able to come back and do anything about it.

tdgeek: Ive got a friend with a US 4 and a UK 3GS, I think you need to do a Jailbreak to unlock?

As with my previous post, it all depends on where they were bought from.

I'm from the UK and got my first 3 iPhones (original, 3G and 3GS) on contract from O2. These were all locked to the carrier but in late 2009 they changed their policy and allowed iPhones to be unlocked on request. This was a pretty simple procedure with just filling in a form on their website and in a few days you got a message saying connect to iTunes and your iPhone will be unlocked and it did. I thought they had changed their policy now and were actually selling the iPhones (even on contract) unlocked but the support document I  quoted earlier disputes that. I do know that purchasing an iPhone direct from Apple is definitely unlocked though.

The USA is different, until recently all iPhones have been locked to the carrier, and am pretty certain they still all are if purchased on contract. But recently you could purchase an iPhone 4 from the Apple Store unlocked, and from sometime next month you should be able to purchase the 4S from an Apple Store in USA unlocked too.

You can jailbreak to unlock but this is not the way carriers officially do it. An official carrier unlock is outlined in my previous post.

If a carrier will not unlock the phone, you can jailbreak and flash an unlocked baseband however this will be "fixed" if you update in itunes. You will then need to jailbreak and unlock again, providing that the firmware you have updated to has a jailbreak and unlock available.

Friend had similar problem on VF. Found out that phone was not "completely" unlocked until re-activated using iTunes to the new country/user. Have you plugged it into iTunes yet?

Ok sorry for the late reply!!

The telecom sim thing wasn't what i thought it was, it was just using telecom to roam through THREE or whatever.

My sisters friend got told this "by a friend in the know":

There is no current jailbreak patch to unlock the operating system my iphone is on
the 4.3.5

Is this true?

Thanks for any help.

One way you can unlock it, as long as you haven't installed IOS 5 is to buy a Gevey SIM from a seller on ebay. It's a tiny card that you slip between your SIM card and a new modified SIM tray. You don't have to jailbreak or install any other software, and the price is minimal so low risk. I did one for a client a couple of months back and although the initial install was tricky, it worked well.
There are several versions of the Gevey, so try and get one of the latest types.
Try this for a start:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Gevey-Ultra-Pro-Unlock-Turbo-SIM-Apple-iPhone-4-iPhone4-iOS4-1-4-3-5-/160673351537?pt=SIM_Cards&hash=item2568e0c771#ht_2124wt_1164

It seems Three will unlock an iPhone for UK£15 (~NZ$30) by calling customer service. Their number from here is +44 7782 333 333.

If the iPhone was bought on contract and this contract was not honoured there's no chance you'll get it unlocked, but if it was bought as PAYG at full price you shouldn't have any difficulty.

Yes this is correct. The latest untethered jailbreak is for iOS 4.3.3. If you don't have saved shsh blobs for this version or lower you cannot downgrade so youre stuck.

The only way to unlock will be to unlock through the carrier or wait for an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak and unlock.
