No you should have a marine radio for backup

I know that.  But my 12' dinghy, which I sometimes fish from, doesn't have a marine VHF, or a battery, or a fish finder, just like loads of other boats out in inshore waters.  I do have two means of propulsion and I do ensure all on board wear buoyancy aids, unlike the majority of kiwi boaters.  It is, however, nice to take a cellphone and know - or perhaps incorrectly assume in this case - that I have some means of communication should it be required.  Silly me had assumed that cellphone networks were 24/7 operations in this country.  Doh!

Look guys, I'm a qualified yachtmaster and I have a seaworthy boat and am very familiar with good boating practice.  If I want advice on boating, I'll go to a boating website where I'll have some chance of finding people with better experience and/or qualifications than me.  Excuse me if my slightly tongue in cheek comment about 2d's network availability has caused controversy; I guess after 18 years of owning a cellphone I sort of expect to be able to make a call when I'm in coverage, have credit, and the battery is charged.  If this is an unreasonable expectation with 2 degrees, then I guess I need to look for an alternative carrier

No carrier is 100%. Dont bother changing since they all have both planned and unplanned outages at varying times.

It's no more or less reasonable than any other carrier. All carriers sometimes have outages, without exception. If you think the miniscule risk that your chosen carrier might be having one at the exact time you need to make a mayday call is too high, I would encourage you to keep a couple of SIMs handy as well as your VHF radio.

Can you just force it to roam on vodafone? might help if you need to make a call now? 


you cant force to roam on vodafone inside 2degrees coverage area. it is not as simple as that

If you called 111 during the 2d outage, then the phone will enter emergency mode and place the call over the VF network wont it?

No network runs 24/7 all it take is some guy on a digger to cut thru a fibre or a drunk to take out a power poll and it's all over rover!

Mobile networks are made up of many cell sites and if anyone tells you they run 24/7 with no outages then they have never worked on a mobile network in their life!

Interesting though that the network wasn't down.  My phone showed a signal, it even showed "3G" on the status line, and my wife's phone worked just fine (also on 2d, roaming to VF just like mine).  This seems to have been a problem with the billing/credit monitoring side of the network, affecting only certain accounts.  I would hope that a 111 call would have bypassed this part of the system and got through - you can after all make emergency calls with no SIM, I believe.
Overall I think 2d provide a great service and have been excellent for the NZ cellphone market.  The rumoured new $19 pack will make them even better for smartphone usersSmile

A 111 call does not touch the Prepay IN and is handled very different from a normal Voice call and I am sure you can no longer call 111 / 911 with no SIM, This was disabled by the request of the emergency services due to all the 111 call hang ups and no way to contact anyone back.

*** Please if you are reading this DO NOT test calling 111 / 911 with no SIM in your handset ***

It relates as I am normally on 3G but since the weekend I have been on Edge, so as the title is "2Degrees Network Failure" I thought that it may apply here. Am I wrong???
