Looking at the readme file makes me think I should be doing something with a DOS command line, but I don't understand the conventions he's using.

So I'm downloading something from the Internet that I don't really understand, from someone I don't know, and run it on my PC. To fix a problem caused entirely by my own stupidity.

I'm just about there. The dll thing was solved by downloading c++ from MS.
Here is the README file:I have copied the confirmation link to notepad and know how to copy it into the command line using alt/space, edit, paste.

I've been trying varieties of [the path] megacracker -h <[the copied link]>

but I always get a message saying "The syntax of the command is incorrect" or "Error '-h' requires a value", "Error: missing argument -h|--hash, -H|--hash-file, or -o|--output"

Can someone advise what I should type?

Here is the README file:

Cracks a Mega password from a confirmation link. Do NOT post your confirmation
link because it contains not only a hash of your password but your encrypted
master key. Once the master key is disclosed all your file can be decrypted.

./megacracker-64 [options]

-h|--hash=<string>
Confirmation link.

-H|--hash-file=<file>
File with confirmation links.

--help
Display help and exit.

-i|--input=<file>
File with passwords to test [default is stdin].

-I|--input-precomp=<file>
File with pregenerated data.

-o|--output=<file>
Output data to use later.

There are at least six things in the confirmation link:
* Encrypted master key (16 bytes)
* Password hash (16 bytes)
* Unknown field (15 bytes?)
* Email address
* Name
* Unknown field (8 bytes?)

This will extract the password hash and crack it.
This will except confirmation links in these forms (You can truncate the data after #confirm to 43 characters):

I just typed in megacracker -h --hash (then immediately followed by the confirmation link string with no spaces between "--hash" and "confirmation link".

Now just tells me that my cpu can run 64 instead of the 32 bit code I'm currently running... not sure what next.

I just tried megacracker -h [confirmation link]. It appears to be doing something. I'm using a very old (expendable!) 333mhz pentium 2 running xp. Task manager- processes is showing megacracker using 908k memory and 0% CPU. But if I sort by CPU usage it is 4th - above cmd, notepad, and others.

The C:\ prompt hasn't come back but the cursor has.

So maybe it is working. I wonder how long I should leave it?

That's not any use to me, as I can just try my guesses on the log in page.

I think megacracker is more aimed at hackers who have a big file of 1000s of common passwords that would be too boring to try one by one.

Pretty quick too....

Is that because you tried uploading the files/folders more than once?

Also, there is a setting in the My Account section that lets you choose whether you want duplicate files or not.

Yesterday none of the files uploaded appeared in the list so I uploaded the same file multiple times. That's what happens when the UX and UI don't work ;)

Talking about account settings, none of the changes I made yesterday are there (upload speed, SSL use, etc).

It seems the load balancing could have caused sync problems in their database?

Yeah, i emailed the author and that was what he said to do.. found it useless in the end.
