I am helping out my cousin who produces CDs of kids musical activities but currently only has physical CDS to sell. For the record they are very good and she is a global name in early childhood musical education.

I have a question about selling digitally online.

Aside from the promotion and marketing aspects offered by iTunes etc what is the simplest way of offering digital downloads for sale and collecting the money? Are there any websites which enable you to upload your digital products and sell them?

Or is it worth going straight to iTunes, amazon etc?

As a example she is doing a workshop soon where about 40 people will want to buy her CDs and it would be a whole lot easier if they could do it online. Although iTunes would be good as a promotional tool something simpler would serve a purpose in the meantime.

Or Wordpress plugin maybe? Or Are there any digital selling plugins from blog hosting sites which you don't have to pay for hosting?

Check this place out, the prices seem quite reasonable, esp at the £19.99 a year for the premium account.

Seems very customisable too. They use PayPal to pay the artists, and the artist is free to set prices of songs and/or albums, from $0.48usd to $8 per song.

And no, I'm not affliated with them at all. Just about to ask about nz dollars.

Perhaps BandCamp? They seem pretty popular with smaller bands, and offer a fully customisable interface. Not sure about numbers.
For an example of a custom profile, try this
