Hi,

I have roughly 100GB of data that I need backed up offsite and need daily incremental backups. Can anyone recommend a service that meets the below criteria.

* Has decent transfer speeds (Mainly upload speeds)

* Support Windows Server 2008 R2

* Easy to setup and administer

I have used iDrive in the past and had issues with downloading uploaded files and their customer support wasn't helpful.

Have looked at CrashPlan Pro and trying to upload a 13GB file is going to take 1.6 days over a 100mbps fibre connection....

13GB should only take like half an hour on a 100Mbps connection. You should get decent connectivity, you would likely be going to their Sydney data centre.

I recently moved from iDrive to crashplan as I found iDrive's service had diminished greatly over the last few years. Additionally, I'd thought that having the data centre closer would make upload faster.

After the slow initial upload, Crashplan works fine for me. However, upload speed is significantly slower than I'd expected. On VDSL (fairly good line with upload speed of 10.3 Mb/s) I've had a max of 4.3 Mb/s upload, but typically get 1-1.3 Mb/s. I'd be keen to know if that matches other users' experience, and if there are tweaks that can be made to improve upload speed.

How much of your 100Gb is changing each day, as this is probably more relevant to how you'll find the service long term?

i'm using Windows Azure Backup for my servers, with about 80GB stored in the cloud. I'm sending incrementals several times a day so the speed doesn't really impact it much (except for initial push, and retrievals).

Its a Microsoft product, so you'd expect it to be engineered to run without trashing the performance of the server.

you can also select to replicate data to multiple data centres for redundancy.

hopefully when Azure brings data centres to Australia, speed will a complete non-issue!

You need to understand if you STORE 100GB of data, and you have a disaster, you will need to "get" it back again too.

Set up on the Sydney gear and speeds should be pretty nice over a fibre connection. If you are deadly serious you can even look at getting direct connections from Vocus or through a AWS Connect service.

They look interesting. Do they have a physical NZ presence? Not too much detail on their website or in the contact section.

Yes their office (and primary equipment) is in Christchurch. Survived the big shakes too. Originally they were Nexus Data. Now part of a bigger picture with more resources but the same awesome people.

We do off-site backups to AWS S3 as well. Glacier archiving (cheap as chips) now being available in Sydney is a win. The speeds we achieve are very similar to uploading/downloading from a server locally hosted in NZ.

Is that simply copying files there or are there any backup application smarts going on as its two very different things.

If you want something a bit more DIY, I use backupsy.com. Essentially you get a VPS you can install your own OS, backup software, etc onto, and if you wait until they next offer a deal on lowendbox.com, you can pick up 500GB backup storage for 7USD/mo.

I run linux and Bittorrent Sync on mine and put Bittorrent Sync on various family members' computers. Much cheaper than 5USD per PC. Even my mother in law's photos are backed up now!
