Moccona has a competition going on, so I obviously visited their site to enter (I buy Moccona instant coffee for the morning cafe au lait).

To my surprise, the site didn't respond. Tried on my mobile (hey, first idea was "Vodafone cache farm having problems again") but nope, site didn't exist.

Checked DNS and neither Vodafone nor Google knew anything about moccona.co.nz...

Yes, DNC.org.nz tells me the domain expired a couple of days ago.

Isn't there something in Outlook called "Tasks" that someone can set with recurring dates to let them know to renew a domain? Don't they receive notices of upcoming expire date? Don't they use Pingdom to let them know if the server is not responding?

This is not the first time we see a large company with a lapse domain. What kind of non-professional people run these things?

Disgruntled ex-employee changed password to domain registrars account, Moccona had no way to extend registration? Far shot but possible. Love a bit of drama.

In the 90's Microsoft's domain expired and a member of the public paid the renewal. There are plenty of excuses for missing the renewal date despite the reminders we get. IMHO companies should have checking domain registration details on their quarterly or half yearly checklist.

Someone's comment on Twitter responding to my note - it's a likely scenario:

My domain provider allows you to renew without logging in. But it would depend on the registrar I guess. Someone maybe able to help them out.

My domain provider (Metaname) has an API for quickly registering domains, so could easily make a bit of a script that does a whois query, when it's available buy but I'm not that crazy.

query_status: 210 PendingRelease
technical_contact_name: HubDigital
technical_contact_address1: Level 2/2 Cross St
technical_contact_city: Auckland
technical_contact_postalcode: 1010
technical_contact_country: NZ (NEW ZEALAND)
technical_contact_phone: +64 9 3799007
technical_contact_email: support@hubdigital.co.nz

So yes, an advertising agency who doesn't have a website at that domain, maybe could be an advertising agency that fell over? I don't know, seems strange that they don't have a website.

HubDigital is a subsidiary (incorporated February this year!) of BCG2 Ltd, who do have a website.  Perhaps flick them a message?

Several years ago it seemed quite common for accountants to buy domain names for their clients (I don't know why, but I had three or four small companies come to me for web design services and I then discovered that their accountant was the registrant for their domains). My clients ask me to buy domain names for them all the time, but I always make sure the client's details go down as the registrant.
