In the latest 8.1 Update you can now close your apps with the X that appears if you hover your mouse near where the title bar would be on a traditional app, but in 2012r2 server it doesn't seem this is possible or at least not via RDP.

Is there somewhere you need to enable this ?

I've just built a 2012 R2 Essentials server and have RDP'd into it.  I can't find any Metro apps on it by default but I might be going blind.  What app?

you probably need to add desktop experience (*) and reboot. Both the Store and "PC Settings" should be there as 'metro' apps.

(*) from server manager, add features, User Interfaces and Infrastructure/Desktop Experience

Thanks for the reply. Yes Desktop Experience is installed. I didn't manually install those updates, but I am completely patched up according to Windows Update. When I searched 2919355 in the update history it showed nothing.

Is it likely I have to manually install them? I have them downloaded and ready to go.

FYI search didn't find the updates with 2919355 in them, including the ones which say "for computers without 2919355". I really wish MS search was better! (Overall)

Strange, after a reboot, it did a "check for new updates automatically" and found nothing, half an hour later I did it manually and it found it. Installing now. thanks.

Problem is resolved. If only MS had shipped W8 with these updates day one, as so many of us suggested.........
