GregV: Hmm, it is not showing the .co.nz entry for a domain I have, but shows two other variants owned by others.

Hopefully the person with *mysurname*.co.nz decides not to grab the .nz

Your .co.nz (Edit: I may have mis-interp'ed the statement, so maybe I should say, one or more, of the *yourlastnames*.something.nz's ???) may not qualify for pre-registration/conflicting (read question 9 of the DNC FAQ at http://dnc.org.nz/story/faq-nz-registrations-directly-second-level domains to participate in the conflict round have to have registration dates prior to 30 May 2012, otherwise they have to be 100% unique to be pre-registered before March)

Thanks nigelj, that explains it.
I had two different situations in that one post.  I have a .co.nz that I only registered this year, so I can now see why that is not appearing.
I am also hoping that the two *mysurname*.blah.nz owners do nothing, allowing me to grab the .nz version.

Looking at the conflict resolution options:
• That you want to try and get your name registered directly at the second level.
• That you don’t want your name registered directly at the second level and don’t mind who has it.
• That you don’t want it and don’t think anyone else should have it.
• That you think it should become a second level domain like .co.nz, .org.nz or .school.nz.

I'd like to see another option:
• That you don’t want it and you think that the current .blah.nz holder should have it.

I'm in the same boat. It would be a bit selfish to block it even if you didn't want it. I wonder if there'll be many .nz's left. Won't they all get bought or blocked?

Are they reserving domain names under .nz? Or will it be possible to register things like com.nz, gov.nz etc?

If you have a .co.nz domain you have the right to register a .nz first when the time comes.

Yes, there are some exceptions (including the ones you've quoted).  I'm sure there's a full list but this was one of the first questions I asked when the policy document was first up for discussion!

Resolved a conflict but now have a problem trying to register through Orcon - they don't list .nz in their available TLDs.

Just had this unlocked:

It appears that the DNC is under massive load - Domain Name Registrars are getting ETIMEDOUT messages however just snatched up my .nz's after some persistence.

OK. So here is a question. I registered some PRE domain names. When can I start using these domain names? Is it not until March or ASAP? My domain panel just showed Prepurchase with no management options.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

1stdomains. Only did it this morning however. I couldn't find anything on anyname.nz about when the TLD actually goes live.

Mine are up and running now, just the DNC is very overloaded.

OK. Thanks. I will be patient. I imagine 1stdomains has a fair old workload at the moment. It is unclear from anyname whether go live date is March or now. Most of the domains I manage are PRR's with a few conflicts. I could imagine it could be a frustrating process for conflicted domain holders.

Cheers, Matt.

Unless you were dealing with registering .NZ domains and read all teh documentation in full, it was a confusing process. I too initially wasn't sure if the go live date was today or march, as it was confusing. Also  the whole reservation thing where you can reserve the PRR domain free for 2 years I didn't know about until I went to the anyname website. I suspect many regisrars didn't want to advertise this all that well, as they would have wanted people to buy their domain now.
