Hi Team,

I've not come across this organisation until now.  Exactly zero clients have ever asked whether we are members of any professional organisation in the last dozen years.  Are there any members here who would like to mention how this membership has been advantageous to them?

When I was studying one of my papers was in a Ethics and Professionalism - and the (then NZCS now IITP) code of ethics was held up as the gold standard.

I finally joined formally a few months ago and have full member status now. They run some great training courses (discounted for members) and are a useful voice representing IT professionals in areas that matter to us. Is it critical to join? No. Should you? If you agree with their mission, yes.

Full member here. Agree with Blakjak.

There are a number of tangible benefits - the obvious one is the events, which are pretty interesting. The discounted professional liability insurance is also handy - got a comparison from my broker this year and that alone more than pays for my membership. However, personally, the biggest reason to be a member is the intangible benefits, and to support their goals - effectively making the profession a better place to work/study.

There are way too many cowboys in this industry. Every week I talk to people who have been treated poorly by others in the industry. This isn't OK. I'm proud to be able to tell people I subscribe to a pretty stringent code of ethics. As an industry, our reputation needs to be improved. It's not something that will or can happen overnight, but something that IITP are working on and I'm very keen to support.

Also very much in support of their ICT-Connect program (and am a speaker for it). There are way too many young people who aren't considering IT as a career because of old and (largely) incorrect stereotypes. This applies even more to girls. My company has trouble finding good staff (as does pretty much every IT company in NZ). Again, this isn't a problem that can be fixed overnight, so happy to support IITP to hopefully alleviate it as much and as quickly as possible.

Full disclosure: I'm a branch committee member, and IITP is a customer of my company.
