This is not exactly 'off topic' but there did not seem to be a 'general internet question' forum!

If I register a domain name with provider A and a few years later it would become more convenient to pay Provider B who also provides my hosting services so that all the bills and renewals were in one place, is it possible to change who you pay for the domain name registration or not?

Transfer the UIDAI.

One too many 'i's' there Tim. :p It's the UDAI code you need to get the registration transferred to another registrar. pretty simple and painless process. :)

Oh cool bananas.

Thanks, knowledgeable internet folks!!

My hosting is with Bluehost in the USA (absolutely excellent, btw) but domain names acquired over time are here, there and everywhere! So I want to tidy up and move it all to Bluehost. Now I know how!

The above advice about UDAI transfer only applies for NZ domains. Bluehost don't that I can see offer NZ domains, so the process is likely to be different, depending on what your domain is.

Your Domain's UDAI (pronounced you dye) is your Domain's password and can be used to move your domain between providers.

If you don't have the UDAI, your registrar must issue it on request.

When you transfer registrars, any prepaid registration time will carry over, so you never need pay any transfer fees, and you won't be billed again until your normal renewal date.

This applies to .nz Domains.

The BilledUntil date will only ever change when you apply a renewal.
If you were led to believe otherwise, someone was jacking you around.

I transferred from them to GoDaddy, I was fully charged from GoDaddy for 1 year from the transfer. No discount or pro rate.

They would have just added a year to your BilledDate.
Technically not a transfer fee.

Pays to use NZ providers with NZ domains. Far easier to deal with, and likely cheaper too. Most of the good ones will transfer the NZ domain free of charge and all applied domain credit is trnasferred with the domain, and you shouldn't need to renew when transferring. If you do find one that requires you to renew on transfer, then look for another provider. Also when you register or renew a domain, make sure the provider is applying the full term to the domain, and not just a month at a time. They are required to apply the full term you paid.
