I totally relied on this one before our local cabinet was upgraded.  Something I liked about it was that while I'd be getting 1.5Mb/s from Ookla, the app would DL videos at close to the 4Mb/s that was coming in to the cabinet.  As with all such apps nowadays, you have to watch carefully when to OK and when to Decline while installing.

[EDIT] I'll front up with a funy, but very embarrasing, story about the app.  I was getting organised for a full OS reinstall, and collecting all my installation files, serial numbers, and emailing out requests for another activation, and actually — honest injun — emailed the developers saying I was sorry, but I was about to reinstall everything but couldn't find my serial number for their 'Free' YouTube Downloader. They never replied, but I can imagine them ROTFL showing my email around the office. embarassed

Agreed, have to be very careful when installing software with agreements - installed ytd downloader yesterday. The sequence for that was agree to initial prompt, next screen, uncheck two checkboxes and then cancel, next screen uncheck two checkboxes and then cancel again. Very easy to uncheck the checkboxes and then click next....

I just tried to install it and the wizard arrived at a window to accept to install a game. I did not accept. Then at the next window I unticked the Opera browser and after that the installation failed

I tried that youtube-dl
It doesn't actually work.
I tried downloading the python as it said, which did install
I then ran the youtube-dl executable.
A black box flashed on screen then nothing happens

Just remember, nothing is ever for free. Make sure you set a restore point before downloading and installing "FREE" software for downloading, ripping etc. Just in case all the other (often hidden) annoying software (read: malware) that comes bundled with it turns out to be nigh on impossible to remove.

I use Youtube Downloader  ytddownloader all the time with no problems  apart from the pesky NOD32 popping up sometimes when you  update it..

Agreed, works fine. Just remember the sequence to installing it that I posted earlier. Very easy to make a mistake and install the other unwanted programs / tool bar / search engine etc with it.

Michael McIntyre does a gag loosely associated with this sort of thing.  I just tried to Google it unsuccessfully, but it is about reading software instructions, and agreeing to terms & conditions, the joke being that no one ever does.  Personally, I do try to carefully read each screen when installing small apps, but I don't think I have 'ever' fully read the terms & conditions before clicking on Yes.

The whole browser toolbar/homepage, etc. thing _used_ not to be an issue.  You could usually trust small apps sourced from the likes of Tucows and Cnet, but in the last few years it seems fully 90% of such apps come with partially hidden extras.  I guess an income is earned from incorporating these extras, and bills need to be paid.

I use Internet Download Manager as it has that feature although I use it mainly as a download accelerator not youtube downloader.

I also use Internet Download Manager, though it is not free. You might want to try the Torch browser. It is free and is supposed to be optimised for downloading from YouTube. I used it a few times before I obtained IDM and it seemed to work ok. Another trick is to preface the YouTube video URL with the letters 'ss'. This takes you to savefrom.net, a YouTube download site. You can also add an extension to your browser which acts like a kind of download manager. Like the other post says, you have to be careful with these and most other free downloads when installing. As long as you unclick the extras you don't want, you should be okay.
