Disclaimer: I am a total noob at this. Bit of a PC enthusiast but I'm trying to learn more about servers. I picked up an old IBM X3400 tower server off trademe, supposedly in good working condition but obviously as I'm posting here, that is not the case. Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction (any advice is appreciated).

The system powers up fine, posts fine, but shortly afterward the front panel system error led indicates, and the system fails to initialise the controller monitor after around 5-10 minutes. Also the SeveRAID error LED on the motherboard comes on (LED 34 IIRC). The controller is an IBM SeveRAID 8K ATB-200. The specific message is "fatal error : controller monitor failed. controller not started". After this I can get into BIOS.

I have pulled and reseated the controller, and that's about the long and short of it. My first thought is to replace the controller and battery, but I thought I'd check here to see if there's anything else I should try first.

Maybe it's a disk issue. RAID disks have to be put back in order I think. If they had been removed and replaced incorrectly or if there is some other issue with them, you'll get these errors. Can you get into the RAID BIOS with CTRL-A?

Perhaps request a refund? Item supplied is not as described. Not fit for purpose? The longer you leave it the less likely the seller would be to accept responsibility.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

I'm not at the server now, but I'll give that a try when I'm home this evening. Thanks for the reply!

I have contacted the seller, and he has said he's happy to refund the money. I'm just trying to make sure it isn't a configuration issue as I got the server for a pretty good price. Thanks for the reply!
